anxiety mimics heart problems?

OK , I am a 36 yr old female, very active, married , 2 kids.

A month ago I had knee surgery to fix my knee, I tore my meniscus running a marathon. I am an avid runner adn I teach kick boxing classes.
3 days after surgery I was relaxing in bed when I sudenly felt a strange wave come over me, I started heaving , I broke out in a sweat like I wter dumped on me and my heart racing and my chest turned ice cold. Scarey.
But I figured it was from my surgery , and all the meds I had taken. The next day it happened again, this time I went to the ER, the back of head got real hot and wasn't messing around with that!

An ekg and blood work revealed nothing, I was SO releived, I figured it was phenergan I took for b=nausea since those side effects werelisted onthe bottle.

Now 3 days I had another almost identical episode. just gettingmy daughter ready for school, my hand went numb, my heart started racing, my head felt hot ( only in the back) and arms got heavy. I was having trouble putting 2 words together. My chest will kind of heavy or tightor even burn ( but no cold sensation like the first time). My chest burns constantly.
I went to my doc, blood work showed no anemia or vit B or low sodium levels.
I had an echocardio gram to look for vavle prolapse, that was normal.

I still feel queasy ,loss of appetite and sometimes my arms and head will get hot. I feellike I'm on the verge of anothe rscarey episode at any moment so I'm hyper aware of every heart beat, feeling, I 'm sick of worrying about this.

Is something being missed? I'm relieved my tests came back normal, but it is a little frustrating as well. I was a normal healthy person. Now I'm on edge , I feel like something is going to cause me die suddenly, instead of being a strong person, runner ect.

My doc is suggesting this is anxiety now. But I had NO anxiety until this started happening. I just want answers and get thorugh this !I have a very supportive husband through all this as well! Thanks for listening!

Re: anxiety mimics heart problems?

Yes anxiety mimics cardiovascular issues. Anxiety can raise systolic blood pressure, cause heart palpitations (feeling your heart or skipped beats) and a plethora of other things.

While these are the classic signs of an anxiety attack and you've had 2 EKG's to rule out things I would recommend a talk with your doctor, especially if you feel you were not under stress/worry at the time of the attack.

For most there is some "trigger" but sometimes we don't even know what that trigger is. So we fear things we associate with when we had an attack. It's like our body being on eggshells just waiting. Let it go long enough and the entire world becomes one giant eggshell.

Have a serious talk with your doctor about 1) ruling out any underlying health issues (be assertive!), 2) tackling anxiety issues early (much easier to fix). Regardless of 1) or 2) ask for recommendations for an anxiety therapist specialist. Just a few visits will help tremendously as health and general issues can cause lots of anxiety and few of us are trained to help ourselves. :)

Best wishes!

It sounds like anxiety and panic attacks to me :)
I take xanax, a small dose at the start of one of my panic attacks and it helps.
Mine are very bad so maybe xanax could help you too.
They are habit forming so I only take one or part of one when and if I need it :)
Once you have had all other causes of this ruled out, read all you can about anxiety.
Knowledge is power and you can even use positive self talk to help you.
Along with xanax, I go to group therapy and a counselor :)
If you can't afford all of this, most towns have a mental health center and you can qualify for free treatment.
Hugs :)

What are the extensive tests checking for? Has anxiety been mentioned? Last thing I'm going to ask about is the wierd headaches I've been gettign since Tuesday, hot feelings jump around in my head but settle on the right side, my right ear will feel hot and I have a wierd feeling onthe right sie of my face.

Maybe once my head gets an all other symptoms will dissapate? Did that happen with any of you?

One test was a EKG the other was an ultrasound of the heart to check for any valve prolapse. Blood work to look for a certain protein that indicates heart disease came back normal as well.
The last think I'm stewing on is the weird headaches since my last episode. They have persisted. I get hot sensations that jump aorund in my head and settle on my right side ( which I've had cluster headaches there plenty of times). But feeling it in my ear and down my face is new.

Anxiety can do a lot of things to the body. If the doctor says it is anxiety then he must of given you something for anxiety? If he did then take it when you feel this coming on and just see if it stops it...I mean it would at least give you another tool to decide if doctor is correct or not? If doctor sent you away without an anti-anxiety medication then he should of and call the office and ask for one. At least you would prove that theory right or wrong. If it helps then great you can at least stop it but if it doesn't work then you know to go to someone else for answers. Good luck. Unfortunately doctors sometimes just don't know the answer to even the simpliest things so we patients have to take it upon ourselves to try things ourselves.

I had the same tests done as you. I don't get headaches so much, I get this rushing feeling that goes from my head to my toes. It usually leaves me weak and nauseous. I was doing really good today and then around 2ish it hit me and almost sent me into a panic attack. I also get little pains in my breasts, like somebody is taking a giant needle and putting it into a muscle. The doctors put me on medication for Anxiety, but I'm still not buying it. I'm going to go back to the doctor again tomorrow to press some more. I've already been to the ER and 3-4 doctors...
