Heightened Anxiety right before falling asleep

Does anyone else experience a heightened anxiety right before falling asleep, right when you are in the state of just conking out? I get this all the time, where I am ready to fall asleep, and think about something that is worrying me, and I have a rush of anxiety and become wide awake again, and can't fall asleep for a while.

I explain this to other people and no one seems to understand what I'm talking about, so maybe some people here knows what I mean and may have experienced this.

I could never find a definitive answer why this happens to me, is the mind more prone to really think things through or realize consequences/results of your worries at this moment?

38yr old white male: Yes, I have suffered from this for many months, and truly years off and on. Most times it occurs between 9pm-12am. I need not be in bed, but getting ready to wrap up the night while lying down watching TV or in bed - A SURGE of TOTAL FEAR courses thru my body, on a 10 scale, about a 7-10, and it is truly frightening.

My blood pressure will skyrocket 20 pts for no reason, believe me when I say I have had more tests than most people can have - no tumors, tilt table negative, 5-6 MRI's negative, etc, etc - but I do suffer from a severe vestibular disorder and have literally been dizzy for 3 years straight. It has almost disabled me entirely.

So my answer is YES, others do feel this - likely a combination of mass stress/anxiety accumulated throughout the day - adrenal release of some sort.

I don't have the sleep anxiety anymore, the beta blocker i'm taking helps with that, so my heart doesn't race before going to bed and my BP doesn't elevate. I used to get it bad though cause if i sleep on my back i have sleep paralysis, so going to sleep was always stressful for me. Now i just can't fall asleep period lol i lay in bed for like 3 hours before falling asleep every night, then when i do fall asleep i wake up like every hour or two. I think it's my anxiety waking me up. The anxiety would happen alot too cause you are in a quiet room alone with your thoughts. if it's not a problem maybe you should try sleeping witha radio or TV sound on to keep your mind off of your anxiety.

Re: Heightened Anxiety right before falling asleep

this has been a common problem for me lately. I used to never be able to fall asleep just because. Now I am so lethargic through out the day that I feel like I am walking in a comatose state. When I finally hit the matress I think I feel so overtired that my body reacts in a weird way and I start to panic right as I am on the cusp of falling into actual sleep. It happened to me about 4 weeks ago and every night its been happening to the point where my heart starts to race, I get the cold rush through my body and I start to shiver. Its so ridiculously frustrating!

It's not good to hear that others experience this too, but I feel better that I am not alone, and others understand what I go through on what seems like a nightly basis. The surge of fear statement pretty much describes it to a T.

Re: Heightened Anxiety right before falling asleep

just wondered what you all who do experience this are diagnosed with? GAD, OCD, or both, I'm wondering if this is common to one or the other or both?

I've been diagnosed with GAD and OCD, what a wonderful combination to have to deal with on a daily basis

Thumbs up Re: Heightened Anxiety right before falling asleep

i experience the exact same thing every single night, its the worse feeling ever. usually anxiety comes often with (PTSD) postraumatic stress disorder. this is caused by a traumatic event that may have occurred in your life, in the past. you find yourself replaying the traumatic event over and over again in your head. i myself have (PTSD) for numerous things, i am diagnosed with not only PTSD but depression ,bipolar, and anxiety disorder. your best bet is to go see your family physician, and tell em about your anxiety, then go see a councillor to find out exactly what is subconsciously bothering you, maybe then ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist whom specialises in this stuff. i am on clonazepam for anxiety and also affexor for depression ....this is not something you should hold off go see your doctor right away cause you don't want to wait until the last minute for this cause it may get worse . i am currently seeing a councillor as well as a psychiatrist cause a psychiatrist can diagnose you and help find the proper medication for you dealing with anxiety is extremely difficult so don't hesitate to seek help. good luck .... hope this helps... i am only 18 but i have loads of experience with this stuff....unfortunatly that is. let me know f i was any help .... take care...

Re: Heightened Anxiety right before falling asleep

Thanks for the information, I understand what you are going through. I've had anxiety since I was a youngster, and I'm close to 30 right now. I think you are right with the PTSD part of the thing too, I may have PTSD in some events in my life, where others may not think the trigger is traumatic, but with my heightened anxiety, it is traumatic to me.

I was going to a psychiatrist, and was on zoloft for about a year, it worked great, however, i gained about 20 pounds and lost hair from the medication, which caused me to become anxious about my appearance, which was counterproductive in that sense, so I've been off of it since 2007, and lost the weight and grew my lost hair back. I quit going to the head doctor, because my insurance wasn't covering much of the visits, and I live paycheck to paycheck, and it really wasn't working wonders. I learned a lot from the doctor about being realistic about worries I had and having a generally good attitude towards things I cannot control.

    Thanks for your input.

Re: Heightened Anxiety right before falling asleep

I have a very bad problem as of late with night time anxiety. I usually am going all day..I ahve 3 kids and work full time. When i do stop for the night I think it all stops too fast. I will start to fall asleep and have that falling/jumping sensation. Then I jerk awake in a panic with my mind racing, my heart pounding and my body running hot and cold. Meaning that I feel like my blood is hot lava but I am shaking and cold on the outside. It is awful. I have learned that if I take a .25 Xanex before i lay down and then read or watch light tv as it takes effect that I can go all night without waking. It is such an awful feeling. I hope that yours gets better really soon
