    Trouble feeling convinced/reassured

    Hi -
Does anyone with anxiety/ocd have trouble with medical stuff? Like when a doctor tells you everything is fine, you have trouble believing them?

    thanks!

Yes!! I've been diagnosed with OCD and GAD and I never ever believe what the doctors tell me. If I do it's for an extremely short time. I just had heart tests done last June and I'm already having more done now because I'm not convinced. I'm so tired of seeing doctors and having tests, yet I can't calm my mind enough to relax and let myself be ok. It's very annoying and I feel like people are starting to think that I'm crazy!! I avoid going so many places because I always think that something is going to happen to me. My therapist recommended the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook 4th Edition because she thought it would help out. Maybe you could give that a shot?

It is normal to feel like you know your body better than a doctor does, and it is normal to have some skepticism. However, if you are allowing your mind to override what a medical professional says it can increase stress and anxiety (I know from experience). My advice would be that doctors see a lot of patients and with experience they are able to tell when there is a problem and when something is benign. I try my best to trust my doctor now, even though it is hard at times. They care about you and if there was a problem they want to help solve it, so put a little more faith in their word.

    Hi,

I too have trouble believig that my symptoms are anxiety related and I have been going back and forth to the Dr for 5 years. I have constant giddiness and feel like um walkikng on a boat, neck cracking, arm weakness, tingles in head and face. I have been for 2 brain scans, blood tests, all normal. Everybody tells me it's anxiety but it is so hard to believe!!

Yes it's very common with anxiety not to believe the doctors when they say you're okay. i've had so many heart tests it's just not funny. had my first ecg at the age of 21. i had a negative stress test last year but I still get funny pains in my back when I walk up hills and I don't know how much of it is my imagination!!!! It drives me crazy. Mind you I've got a family history of heart trouble so I've got a bit of a reason to worry, especially now that I'm 40. My anxiety restricts me a bit but not too much. I would never go overseas by myself (although I did when I was 21 and had lots of panic attacks that I didn't realise were panic attacks and thought they were heart/stroke problems). THe only thing that helps is antidepressants and I hate those. Actually xanax helps too but I try not to take too much of that.

and yes, to the last poster, if someone close dies young I think it does hype up your own health anxiety - especially if you've got a bit of a predisposition to being anxious. when i was in my 20s a guy who worked in the place next door died of a heart attack go-carting at the age of 29. guess what I won't do now??
