anxiety getting me down

anxiety getting me down

have been fighting anxiety and depression for a long time, getting to the end of my rope, work is becoming more stressful, and it seems like meds dont work as good anymore..therapey when i can get in but they are always booked a month out. any help from the board?

You should definitely talk to your doctor if you feel like the meds aren't helping, there are a variety they can try and different people react better to some than others.

There are books out there that you can use to do CBT therapy on your own as an extra help in between therapy sessions and if you are working with a therapist see if they can give you assignments to work on in between sessions and set goals to help you feel like you are making progress.

Two books I have used and are well regarded are:
"The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook" by Edmund Bourne phd
"Get Out of Your Mind And Into Your Life: The New Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" by Stephen Hayes

You should also see if you can find anxiety and/or depression support groups in your area.

Maybe you should try reading the book... don't sweat the small stuff-and it's all small stuff. I forget the author but you can find it at your local bookstore or library probably.

I would highly recommend searching out a new therapist. CBT therapy has proven to be very effective for many people. I can relate on work being stressful and feeling at the end of your rope, but it is necessary to keep moving forward. (can be very challenging). You are a strong person and you can overcome this anxiety. If your medication isn't working as effectively speak to your doctor about getting a different one. I personally have never taken any medication for my anxiety so I cannot be much help there.

Try to find time in your day to relax, whether it just be 10 minutes. Do some deep breathing exercises. "Belly breathing" helps me when I am in midst of an anxiety attack. Put your hand right above your diaphram and feel it rise and fall with every deep breathe. It takes time to conquer anxiety but once we start to relax ourselves and bring our underlying anxiety levels down our symptoms generally start to diminish as well. Best of luck to you.
