    Excedrin helps my anxiety

Both my daughter and I have been diagnosed with anxiety and are currently taking anxiolytic meds (Lexapro and diazepam, in my case). We both discovered independently that taking one excedrin tablet (500 mgs acetominephen plus 65 mgs caffeine) makes us feel remarkably calmer/less worried/have an easier time socializing. I just read today that there was a study done last year (2013) showing that Tylenol can decrease the "existential dread" type of anxiety -- basically fears of yourself or others dying. This fits in with my experience and has made me wonder if others have discovered this "treatment" on their own

    Re: Excedrin helps my anxiety

the active drug in tylenol is believed to work via receptors in the brain to reduce the perception of pain. It may be possible that for some people this may have a role in their level of anxiety. I have found that tylenol is a weak pain med that does little for me for pain and certainly nothing for my own level of anxiety or existential phenomonology. When I have pain I use aspirin and that may reduce my anxiety if the trigger is from pain and the pain is reduced. Anything is possible. Another conjecture could be that the excedrin interferes somewhat with the metabolism of your meds either increasing or reducing blood levels of them. You could ask your pharmacist or doc if this is so and be forwarned that using excedrin chronically increases your risk for serious gastric ulceration so your doc needs to know if you are using it long term to monitor you.

    Re: Excedrin helps my anxiety

    Flitz,
Thank you the reply. As I said in my original post, the excedrin I use contains only acetominophen and caffeine -- no aspirin. I think that lessens considerably concerns anyone would have about gastric problems, no? I do appreciate your conjectures and hope more people weigh in on this. I understand that my response to excedrin is unusual and even counterintuitive, but I'm just looking to see if there are others like me and my daughter out there. Btw, my daughter has this same response to excedrin even when she is taking no other medications at all.
    Thanks,
    Lindy
