I am asking for a friend who was recently diagnosed with stage III rectal cancer. Has anyone tried the NOM (nonoperative management) treatment advocated by sloan kettering and only treated their rectal cancer via chemo and radiation. The surgeon she saw only recommends (of course) surgery after an initial round of chemo and radiation followed by another round of chemo and stated although she would need a temporary ileostomy there was a "good chance" he could preserve sphincter control and she would not require a permanent colostomy.......your thoughts on this?? has anyone tried the NOM route and if so what were your results? are there any here who had the surgery and did not have complications resulting in a colostomy? please share your experiences .......thanks.
