Mascara is 100% chemicals, yet it still has to be cosmetically safe, so maufacturers can't use stuff like perfumes to disguise the odor (since they have to be fragrance-free, safe for sensitive eyes, etc.)

ALWAYS sniff your mascara when you first open a new bottle, get used to the scent (even if its gross) so you're aware to changes in odor (this may mean that the product has gone bad). Better yet, use a permanent marker and write down the date that you first use the mascara on the tube. Then throw it out after 3 months, whether you've finished it or not. This will guarantee you're not putting spoiled product on those pretty eyes!
