I'm new on the board so hello to all. I've had a brown spot on my arm for a long time, a little smaller than a dime. It's never bothered me until the past few months. It's been crusty on one edge, sometimes it's a light brown and then gets dark, it even looked blue for awhile. It does'nt itch and it's not sore but it does look awful. When I first noticed it about 3 years ago I just thought it was an age spot, I'm 57. I've been surfing the internet and it really doesn'nt match anything I've seen. Does anyone out there have any idea of what it could be? I've just started a new job and won't have insurance until October. I have a feeling that it's cancer however, if it is would'nt it be sore? Any and all replies would be appreciated.

Here is a article from the oncology channel that answers your question:

dermatologists (specialists in skin diseases) have developed the ABCD rule. According to this guide, the following features characterize melanoma:

Asymmetry - One half of the mole does not match the other half.
Border Irregularity - The borders (edges) of the mole are jagged or notched.
Color - There is no overall color of the mole; parts may be varying shades of black, brown, or tan, with white, red, or even blue splotches.
Diameter - Most melanomas are wider than 6 millimeters, although some may range between 3 and 6 millimeters in size.
Not all melanomas have the features defined by the ABCD rule, so it is necessary to watch for any skin symptoms that last longer than 2 weeks. Any new, colored growths or changes in existing moles or lesions should be reported to a physician, preferably a dermatologist (skin specialist), without delay.Because skin cancers rarely are painful, one should not wait to call a physician if the lesion doesn't "hurt."

Hi! I posted on here because I have a fairly new spot on my head. No one is answering. That is some good advice. My spot matches all of those except for the color, mine is all brown. What do you mean by one half of the mole does not match the other?

If you would draw a line through the middle of the mole and compare the two sides they would not look the same.

Oh, that sucks! I guess I should have this one checked out. Since I let it go for over a year now, wouldn't I be really sick? How fast can skin cancer spread without treatment? My spot has all of those discriptions but mine is more of a light brown color and looks like a birth mark ( except that I noticed it over a year ago, and it got bigger). Are my too young for skin cancer or does it happen in all ages, I'm 26? I grew up over baking myself in the sun. I know that my parents never used sun block as a child, and as a teen, I never used it. I use to sun tan all the time, try to get as dark as possible, I don't anymore. Thank you for your reply! No one has replied to my question. Sorry for taking over Dolphin Lover.

The chance of getting skin cancer increases with age, but you can get it at any age. The rate of spread all depends on the person and the type of cancer, it is mostly difficult to tell if it has spread unless you have testing.

The spot on my arm that turned into Melanoma was pink. Not the ABCD's of the skin dermatologist thing. So if your in doubt cut it out! Mine was about the size of a pencil eraser and had an imflammation aroundit..slightly. Came back as a Breslow .80 Stage 1 melanoma. I had over 30 some stitches to get that itty bitty stuff out and it came back with clear margins!

Thanks Ga Lady and Lindsey04 for your replies. I will get it checked and soon. I was'nt really worried until it started developing a crust and turning colors. What seems odd to me is that it does'nt hurt or ooze anything, just a crusty, scabby ugly looking thing. Today it hardly has any color at all except for the crust which is dark brown and the rest of it is almost skin color. Some days it's been a blue color and then other days it's white looking, weird huh? Anyway thanks again, will keep you posted.
