Change in a mole should be evaluated by a doctor.

I had an itching mole once myself--it turned out to be nothing. It didn't change in appearance, though, although it wouldn't have to for it to be "something." In the end, I was annoyed by the whole thing because I kind of liked that mole, and now it's gone. And the stitches were no fun.

But definitely, any change should be checked out. It's better to go through the surgery and have it be nothing than to not and have it be something...or something. :) Melanomas are easy to fix when they're small, but sooner or later, they'll become a real problem.
