If the product used is exactly the same, then dying ALL of your hair will be more damaging since all of it gets bleached. If you aren't using a bleach and are just using a color (for highlights OR all-over color), it won't be as damaging. I have never done all of my hair blonde. I'm a natural brunette and I get highlights pretty often. I've done enough highlights to be mostly blonde. As long as you don't go way too light all at once and take good care of your hair, you shouldn't have a lot of damage anyway.

I start off getting medium-blonde highlights, then gradually get them a lighter blonde. I use a really moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and deep condition if needed. I also use a leave-in hair serum that really helps keep my hair soft. I flat iron about twice a week and don't blow dry my hair. I mostly let it air dry to have my natural waves just because it's so thick and straightening it is time consuming. I also get regular hair trims to trim off any dry ends. Taking care of my hair like this has kept it healthy even with bleach highlights! The one time it got pretty damaged, I asked for a ton of platinum blonde highlights and went mostly all blonde in one sitting. Now I just do a little at a time and it comes out much nicer.

It depends on the products you are using and who is doing your hair. I've done my own hair with dyes and damaged it insanely because I used box dyes. I would strongly advise that you stay away from those.
Bleaching can be damaging if you don't know how to use it properly. I suggest that if you plan on getting highlights do your reserach. Find a very good, reputable hair stylist in your area to do your hair. I used to get my hair done at a salon until the girl who used to do my hair quit her job, so I had to go to a different girl... she screwed up my hair and I never went back to that salon again.

I learned to do my own hair and now I bleach it without any significant damage whatsoever. You just have to be careful with that kind of stuff. If done properly the damage will be very minimal with both... you just have to know how to do it or find someone who knows how to do it correctly without completely ruining your hair.

I'd LOVE to be able to highlight my own hair!! I'd just worry about how the back of my hair would turn out, and I don't really have anyone who would be good for helping me out with that. My hair's pretty thick (I get it thinned out a lot though) and long, so I think that would be tough! Kudos to you EllieFrog! Last time it was over $200 at the salon after tip and I'd rather use that money for something else! They did a great job though so it was still worth it :) THe last few times before that, I hated how my hair turned out.

I don't highlight it by myself anymore. I used to have highlights but than I tried to get rid of them and so far it's worked well. Now I just touch up my roots and have mostly overall blonde and it works great. I can't imagine highlighting my own hair... I also have insanely thick hair and it would be impossible to highlight it myself without totally screwing it up and having my arms fall off (lol).

I used to go to a salon and it usually cost about $110, and $70 for root touch-ups. I am so glad I no longer have to throw my money away like that. Now I spend about $10 per month to do my own hair... huge savings!

It depends. Both can be damaging. The trick here is to use products that have natural oils and avoid anything with ammonia.

I have short hair and I have it colored any highlighted every other month, and cut once a month with a root touch up. I wont use boxed hair colors as they tend to change colors on me even though I was buying the same color all the time and the same expensive brand. I have a great sylist and she is also a color specialist. Sinse my hair is short it only costs about &50.00 every other month and cut and roots is $30.00. I could use that money for more important things, but I have had my hair ruined 4 times by boxed hair color, so it's worth it to me.

That is great! Talk about big savings! I used to have mostly overall blonde so I guess I could have done this at the time. Does the bleach irritate your scalp? Usually I'm okay with it, but last time I got nearly platinum blonde highlights and it was stinging my scalp! And that was ONLY for highlights. For now I'll have to continue getting mine done by a pro since I'm trying to keep some brown in it (I am getting married in December and want to be close to my natural color). I used to know a lady who did full highlights AND cut for $60 and did an awesome job. Unfortunately she moved away!
