I think my Dr. was a bit concerned but when you can eat so little that puts on wieght what can I do? Water is all I drink for fear of flaring up acid even worse? Any help? Sugar is a no-no...everything causes acid.

Yes...I have lost weight due to this horrible disease...and I'm now considered underweight from all the weight loss. I want to eat but I'm afraid because it flares up acid...I don't know what to do anymore. I just feel like crying all the time. I hate this and I want it to go away so I could live a normal happy life. Right now I am having a horrible flare up (throat burning, lump in throat, burping big time) and no medication I take works....I can't believe my life has turned to this....so sad. Worst part is that nobody believes what I am going through and they think it's all in my head....arghhhh

Sorry I can't help you with any advice because I just don't know myself....

Silver....I know it's not in your head. This is horrible. I'm like you, afraid to eat anything that will make my throat burn even more. Everyon is saying i'm gettingtoo thin and I prayican maintain itand notmlose anymore. Sooo tonight I thought the **** with this, I'm going to eat a high caloric meal. So I went to MCDonalds and had a Big Mac and a chocolate shake. I called my ENT's nurse today and she told me to eat shakes , pasta and anything that wasn't spicey. I was surprised at the shake but I did it. Maybe I was going over board...so lets see how I'll feel tomorrow. I wish the throat thing would go away. Have you tried Nexium? If so how long did you give it? A couple of friends of mine it took 6 month and it finaly worked.

I've lost about 7kgs (15 pounds) over the last 6 months due to the radical change in diet. It's due to the change in diet so dramatically, from full cream milk to low fat, the dramatic cut down in foods like chocolate, donuts, takeaway foods, crisps etc. Another factor is due to eating smaller meals every 2.5 hrs or so throughout the day which helps with digestion and not putting on weight but cutting down on it. Feels weird to look at those scale mention a number I haven't seen since I was in my teens or so. I'm lucky in that I can eat almost what I want during the day as my reflux is just a sleeping thing but I still try to be as careful as possible. I feel a bit like you at time painter207, just wanting to try my old diet to see if the symptoms are any different to what they have been with the *improved* diet.

hey all acid reflux sufferers ..............i was diagnosed with acid reflux in Jan of this year and since then I have lost about 20 lbs. At first it was a good thing that i was losing weight but now it is getting a little scary:eek: i now weigh about 140. I have people at work ask me " are you still losing weight" and I am like yea I can't help it. This reflux is no fun....... I mean what are you supposed to eat that has any calories in it? Everything that has calories is bad for acid reflux. My symptoms of this horrid condition are burping a lot, burning throat, bloated stomach at times, not really hungry a lot of times. I was doing good for a while and now I have had a set back or whatever. This week has been pretty bad even causing me to stay home from work for a couple of days.:( I am currently on Nexium once a day and Reglan as needed. Anybody else suffering with such horrible symptoms? What is everyone finding to eat that has some calories to it?

Yup....suffering from the same junk. How long have you been blessed with a sore throat? Is it constant? Mine is and just when I think it may be ok it's worse the next day. I had a pepsi the other night with dinner....had only water for the last two month. It was soooo good, but did my throat hurt the next day. Far worse than ever. I lost 30 # and ate a lot of rice cakes with ialmond butter. Banannas and mashed potatoes veges and meat. Some salads. I finally said the heck with it I have to eat or I won't stop loosing. So
I got some milk shakes and made pasta with stroganoff. My ENT's nurse told me to eat choc. shakes.....hello....does she not know chocolate and dairy are bad? Well, I suffered a little but was worth it for me.

So for fear of losing more weight I finally started eating pretty much like I was before all this started. I haven't been gettting bad reactions stomach wise but still have the throat problem which has gotten a lot better but...not gone copletely. I can't however gain weight. Has anyone else had the problem of not putting it back on? It's only been a couple of weekes but I would of thought something would go on, because I've had desserts a few times.

I guess one could expect some weight loss due to not eating, but drastic weight loss can point to other problems causing the acid issues such as your pancreas.

I wish I could lose weight a little more easily. Since I've had acid reflux I found that I've gained weight. Of course, being middle aged (47) might have something to do with my metabolism slowing down but I've also heard Nexium (which I take) might cause some weight gain. I don't know if that is true or not.

Everyone is different but if you are looking to gain weight, have you tried any of those Ensure type drinks? I don't know if that would aggravate your condition but I heard they are great to put on weight.

Good luck and feel better!!!

I too have lost 14# since last summer when my NIGHTMARE began with this horrible disease! I have always had trouble maintaining my weight. I was around 102# a year ago & now 88#. I look like a skeleton & have very little energy. I think part of it are all these drugs the Drs. push that only help a little for me and then stop working and I try another brand. (PPI's) Wish I could help with suggestions on what to eat but I'm looking for answers: frustruated!!!! Had an endoscopy/colonoscopy 07/08 which showed EE w/small ulcer & hiatel hernia. No H.pyloria & colonoscopy was fine. I also have double scoliosis which is getting more severe as I age (53 yr old female) I think that is major factor in my problems. I need too find a doctor who will listen to me b/c my gastro is an idiot and I'm sick of all the tests I've had that show nothing (but huge medical $$$) I want off these meds and have tried a few natural methods with no sucess so far. Am now looking into a newer procedure called the EsophyX TIF. Incisionless surgery for GERD. The only surgeon who does it in my area has only done 3 so far, that makes me nervous! In the meantime I would love any help on foods that have worked for anyone else. I've tried stuff like Ensure but it is far too rich. I too drink only water. Sometimes I can eat something and be ok, and the next time not. I"ve already eliminated ALL normal trigger foods & drink. How I miss COFFEE!! Thanks, sorry this is so long and depressing. Any help???

What are your symtems? I finally quite the reflux diet and started to eat most everything. Nothing was really helping anyway. However I don't drink coffee or I havent eaten tomatoe foods. So in essence I've gained some weight back. Do you have the hearturn or throat burn?

When this all started I had severe heartburn. Thought I was having a heart attack & ended up going to ER by ambulance. The heartburn isn't as bad the last few months, now it's more the throat burn. It's especially bad from approx 4:00am until early afternoon. I feel best in the evenings. I stay up for at least 5 hrs after my last food but I still wake up off & on all night. I know it's hard on my husband too. Lucky for me he's the best guy in the world. Thinking about trying the aloe vera juice. Does anyone know if you should get off the PPI's when you start trying natural things like that?

I wouldn't think you need to get off your meds. I do both. How many times do you take your PPI's? What do you take? They say with throat burn you need to take them twicw a day.

Hi--Thanks for the reply. I take Aciphex 20 mg. I was on 20mg of the omeprozole twice a day, then it stopped working but it never worked very well in the 1st place. Before that I tried once a day Nexium 40mg. It made me sick. Same with Prevacid, that gave me terrible stomach pain & depression. I don't have too much side affects w/Aciphex but my insurance won't pay for more then 30 pills per month. If I wasn't laid off I'd pay for it myself if I could if 2 a day worked. But what I REALLY want is to get off them. I already have osteopina. When you say you do both, what do you mean? Do you do the aloe vera juice or some other more natural remedy?

Take your medication and eat, that's what I do because I had lost at least 15lbs over the last 3yrs from being scared to eat like I used to. Wheter you change your diet or not it will flare up whenever it wants to(devil)that's what acid reflux is. Seriously just eat, if you start to feel bad after eating take 2 big spoons of raw honey, eat an apple,or take some baking soda and put it on your tongue it works for me,I like to eat so I just take my medication ranitidine and eat what I want. The only thing I won't eat is onions or any food with onions in it,this will give you the worst flare up. The best cure for those flare ups is prayer if you believe in the power of prayer. When my AR flares up on me in the middle of the night I just get up and start praying it can't hurt. We gonna be allright all of us because someone is working on a cure for this right now. I pray that you feel better.

You know what some of these dummies in the medical field need to do some more research on AR and what you can and cannot take or eat. They prescribe medication that will flare up your AR without even thinking about it or asking you about it, I had this happen to me so many times now I tell them what I can't eat or take. Chocolate is the worst thing you can eat with AR. To gain weight back I drink boost, but Im not able to afford it all the time so I can't maintain the weight. If you are on previcid or prosolac it will definitely make you loose weight, at first I didnt know why I was loosing weight, so I did some research and got my medication switched to ranitidine. Im going to see how long this med will work because they all stop working after awhile and you have to keep switching, and you can feel it when your medication is about to stop working because the symtoms come back slowly but surely. I wish these people who went to school to be doctors do some more research on AR and take it more serious because it is serious!

I feel so bad for you and I know exactly how you feel but you got to stop letting it consume you and fight back. If one medication dont work ask your doctor to switch you to another one, right now Im on ranitidine it works and the prescription is only $4. so the more you pay doesn't mean the more it will work I found this out after spending hundreds on acid reflux meds. Please pray that helps the most especially with the depression from having this awful disease. I used to cry all the time too but it doesn't help at all so I stopped and starting researching for help with this AR and I feel better most of the time. Try eating a few spoons of raw honey everyday. Change your diet a little bit no red sauce,no onions,no hot food or hot sauce,no cofee,no soda,no chocolate and drink plenty of water.Once you start feeling better you can go back to some of this food along with your meds just don't over do it with the foods that will flare it up.Whenever you have a flare up write down what you had last that could have possibly caused it. Trust me I have 4yrs of experience with AR and Ive been to hell and back so I know what Im talking about. I have tried just about everything and oh don't forget to exersize that helps alot too I take walks every other day especially right after you eat dinner it helps your food to go where it should go. Hope this helps you because I hate to see people suffer with this because I suffered alot with it and no one understands it or do they believe you that you really feel that bad unless they have it themselves.
