View Full Version : Reoccuring fever

My normal developing 16 year old son keeps getting a reoccuring fever with flu symptoms. He has been sick every month for the past nine months! He has been perscribed antibiotics that help with the symptoms, so he can get back to school and his sports, but he becomes sick again, two weeks later. He suffers from hay fever, but is otherwise very healthy. I can not figure out why he keeps getting this fever.

I am going to ask for some blood work to be done and to see what else he could be allergic to, but I am so frustrated for him. He hates being sick.

Hi Bonnie,

Your son has a syndrome which doctors call "fever of unknown origin" and it is a very specific medical entity. The reason doctors make such a big deal of it is because any fever which lasts for more than 2 or 3 weeks needs to aggressively be investigated for an underlying cause. It is impossible to completely tell where the fever is coming from just by history alone...a physical examination, blood tests and some imaging will need to be done. Even after extensive testing, up to 30% of people are without a diagnosis, but the fortunate thing is that people who fall in to this category, the fever eventually goes away.

This is NOT something your family doctor should be investigating. Your son should be seen by a specialist--usually it's infectious disease doctors or rheumatologists who are the best to investigate this.
