Hello everyone!! It has been a long time since I have posted on the board, so I am going to describe the "mysterious right sided pain" that some of us had a while back. I thought maybe with some new members, it might ring a bell with someone! Speaking for myself, I first had this pain about 10 yrs. ago. It disappeared when I got pregnant 9 yrs. ago, and just came back about 3 yrs. ago. Okay, here goes. If you were to draw a line from your belly button, straight across to the top of your pelvic bone(some people call it their hip bone), right in between the two is where I feel this pain. It feels like the side ache you feel after running or walking fast. Some times I feel it a little lower and sometimes I feel it a little higher, under the ribs. It aches all the way around to my right lower back. I have bowel problems, but this peticular pain is not related to the bowels or stomach. For you ladies, it feels like it does when you ovulate. It is a pinching like pain. It hurts when I walk, and sit(any pressure on the rectum makes it worse) The tests I have had are... vaginal ultrasound-ovaries looked normal, ultrasound-ruled out gallstones but discovered a horse shoe shaped kidney(they say not related and probably would have never discovered it if I had not had the ultrasound, upper and lower GI series-found some small diverticula on the right(close to where the pain is). The doc thinks the div. are too small to be causing pain, stool cultures-found excessive white blood cells and no blood, colonoscopy-except for the small div. nothing abnormal was found. Lots of blood tests- normal kidney and liver function, no inflammation in the body, normal white and red blood cell count. This pain occurs off and on. In Feb. I went to my GYN and was diagnosed with endometriosis. I will have another vaginal ultrasound in June. My doc put me on birth control pills (hubby took care of that, so really don't need them for BC). She said that the progesterone only pill I was taking would shrink the endo. which she thought was causing my pain. I have been on this pill for three weeks and the pain has been worse than ever, constant!! I am at a loss as to what this is!! Anyone with any advice or comments please write back. I am getting really desperate with this. The docs I have gone to blow me off. Thanks!

Janet:

I also have endometriosis and my doc at the time also put me on birth control pills. Only they were regular and I didn't take the dummy pills so I wouldn't have a period. About the best six months of my life. I know that I have endometrial scar tissue on my colon which causes the diarrhea and scar tissue can cause constipation, but it's on the outside of the intestines. I also know when I have a hormonal fluctuation my side hurts very badly. Also when I accidently take my hormone pill (which is straight estrogen by the way) I cramp and hurt. I believe the progresterone is supposed to diminish the tissue and estrogen causes it to swell. You might need a laporoscopy to determine if there is scar tissue on your right side. What about ovarian cysts? Sometimes, they are so small they won't show up on ultra sound, but do cause a very piercing pain much like ovulation. Sometimes cysts can bubble up during hormonal fluctuations then go down just as quickly making them hard to catch. Did this help at all? Pregnancy is supposed to be a cure for endometriosis (old wives tale). You should be free and clear!

Hi Angie! It was great hearing from you, thanks for responding! Hows Texas this time of year? Hot I suppose. My doc told me about the endo. at last years visit, but she said it wasn't bad. Then this year she said my uterus was about 20% larger than last year. She said she felt a lesion on the right back side of my uterus, which she believes is what's causing the back pain. This other right sided pain is weird, though. I am not sure it is the endo. or not. Before the pain was unpredictable, it came and went. I have been on the progesterone only pills for three weeks and have had the pain non stop. It feels like I have been ovulating for three weeks! I have thought of cysts, too. But would I feel this pain for three weeks straight? This pain is not related to my bowel problems, or at least I don't think so. I am still mostly constipated (unless I am really religious about the fiber, which I try to be), and have bouts of D, usually after eating something that didn't agree. If I press the area where I feel this pain it hurts a lot. I am having a vaginal ultrasound in June, my doc also supects fibroids. The only thing is, my periods are only about 3-4 days long and only somewhat heavy the first day or two. About the kids, I know <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/tongue.gif">, I have at least decreased my chances of getting ovarian cancer by about 40%, I also breastfed all of them! Yes, your input helped a lot. If you have anything else to add, I would welcome it! How are you doing with the celiac? Talk to ya soon <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

Janet,
It's great to have you back on the boards! Sorry, I can't think of anything that would help you figure out the pain. I don't want to see you disappear again, but why don't you try posting your message on some of the other boards...............gen health, meno, women's health, etc. Maybe you can just copy & paste most of it. Good luck, Ann

Janet:

Yep, tornado season down here, so we are on the lookout! Not hot yet, only 90 degrees today. Getting ready to ship cattle, so the temp will have to go up at least 10 degrees before we do that, just for tradition sake!

Fibroids makes sense. I don't know much about them, but if it hurts to take the bc pills, I would call the dr. and see if you can discontinue. If there is a lesion, it could also be adneomyosis which is when the endometriosis goes into the muscle tissues of the uterus. However, there is much more bleeding. And it hurts like crazy. I had to have a hysterectomy (Yeah! Ursula Uterus took a hike!)and they didn't know what was wrong with it until the pathology report. I breastfed two, I can't imagine breastfeeding four! Don't get me wrong, I loved it. I don't however, miss the diaper changes!

Celiac is doing fine as long as I don't chew gum...found out the hard way it has wheat fillers and starches. Almost ended up in the hospital this weekend, not because of that (although I did have the #$%@ scared out of me). I was in the garden bragging on my squash plants, pulling weeds and babying them and as I was pulling a weed, I almost pulled a rattlesnake along with it. Neither Celiac or IBS gave me this kind of bowel rush! Anyway, the snake is not alive any longer and I am, so things are going well!

Sounds like you have your summer vacation planned again this year. Colonoscopy last year...hysterectomy this year? One of the best surgeries I've ever had! I'd borrow someone elses and do it again if I could. My endometriosis caused major bowel problems, and still does. I still have the tissue on my colon and I can definitly tell when my hormones are fluctuating. The swelling causes a different feeling altogether than the IBS or Celiac. I would call my dr. and mention the BC pills causing pain. Or get off them and see if the pain stops, then call him. It could be that the pain started and just so happened to coincide with the BC pills. Unlikely, but you never know...

Well this may be a long shot, but I figured I'd mention it. I had mentioned in another post that I've found some relief from pelivc/stomach/lower torso area pain from physical therapy. As far as I can tell, the constipation I used to get (still get it occassionally, but not as bad) caused weakness in my muscles in that region. The pain in that area doesn't get as bad as it used to and cramps around period time are much less. Don't know why you'd experience more pain since being on the pill, though, if muscle pain were the problem. I guess like Angie E said it could be coincidental that the two started up at the same time. Good luck.

Thanks to all of my good "old" friends on the board who responded! What a welcome back! The last three days the pain seemed to have gotten worse. Then last night it doubled me over. It went from just above my pubic bone on the right up and around the curve of the top of my pelvis and into my right lower back. When my bladder was full it sent shooting pains. I took some advil and a levbid and went to bed. This morning I woke up without a pain! It is the first time in three weeks (since I began the progestin only pill)that I have been pain free. I am just wondering if I had an ovarian cyst or something and it burst. It is so hard to tell if it is gastro. or GYN related or maybe both. Like you said, Angie, my doc said that the endo. could have attatched itself to the colon and/or bladder. Well, I guess its a waiting game to see what happens next. Thanks to everyone for responding! Janet P.S. Hi Harry! Don't you worry, I'm taking my fiber everyday! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/biggrin.gif">

For anyone else who reads this,i'd like to add,Janet and i went on the same exact progestin pill, same brand, and miligrams and we didn't know it until i mentioned it to her! our doctors both had the same idea about our right sided pain, needless to say, after 11 days on the pill, the right pain was non stop, and my dr told me to stop the pills if they were causing more pain.He also told me since the pain got WORSE on the pill,he doubts its endo. because the pill puts your ovaries to "sleep" so now he says it may be hormones annoying the IBS,on the right side.So i too have my hands up in the air.I am also waiting to see what my dr plans on doing about this now. Any opinions?

I have had an ovarian cyst burst before and it will double you over. Feels like what I would think a knife feels as you are being stabbed, only from the inside out. I was walking home from school one day and my mom just so happen to drive by and see me doubled over on the side of the road. But when they burst, it's just like nothing ever happened and like there was never any pain. Are you still taking the BC pills?

Yep...Cysts are wonderful aren't they!

My cysts went side to side, but were primarily on the right. One month right, the next left, then right for about three months. I want to be reincarnated as a man!

You mean to tell me that you know for sure that these pills can cause cysts?! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/eek.gif"> I didn't read that in the insert(didn't read the whole thing). Yes, I am still taking the pill, I wanted to keep taking it for the endo, but if this is going to happen again, I not staying on it! Thanks again, everyone, for the support!
