I'm curious about the long term side effects, if there are any, of using fiber suppliments to cure constipation. My doctor told me to use it for 2 weeks to see if it helps, which it has. But if I keep using it, will that do more harm than good in the long run?

Citrucel is a water soluble fiber supplement that is safe to take daily with no long term side effects. It is a semi- synthetic fiber-- methylcellulose.Your intestinal bacteria does not eat it as a result it does not ferment and cause GAS.

The other water soluble fiber is psyllium husk in Metamucil & Equate from Wal Mart(cheaper) and in many other brands is natural and does breakdown and ferment causing gas when you first start using it.But, it usually goes away in a few days.

Both are safe to use <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif"> <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif">
