View Full Version : IBS diagnosis too fast? Could it be something else?

I had an appointment today with my OB/GYN...by the way, I never saw a doctor, I saw an RN. I had several complaints: severe cramping and abdominal pressure, bloating, constipation (no BMs without a laxative and then, very loose BMs), lethargy, vaginal bleeding. All of these symptoms have been over the past two months. After a pelvic and rectal exam, as well as a UA and a hemo test, I was told that I have IBS. I was given a script for the bloating, a script to cease the vaginal bleeding and the recommendation to take a stool softener twice daily. Does the pressure and bloating caused by IBS occur in the lower abdominal area (uterus)...because this is where I feel the most pain. Please, I was given nothing to read by my Dr's office and I sure could use some advice, suggestions, and comments regarding my issues. Thanks.

Yes i have all these symptoms and i was told the same but i also had a barium enima, this showed i also had some diverticulitis, all my symptoms are in the lower abdomen,i was told the heavy bleeding i get is probabley due to peri-menopause as i'm 48yrs,i have found probiotics do help a little but i'm still searching for a possible cure(like many more people who use this site)hope this helps a little, and you feel a bit better soon, you are not on your own.ginette

Ginette- Thanks for the quick reply. My biggest concern was with the bleeding. I didn't see that listed as a symptom of IBS. It didn't seem like the two were related at all. Thank you for your advice. It is much appreciated.

Sounds like you might have more than one problem, as vaginal bleeding does not sound like part of IBS. Your other symptoms of gas, bloating constipation/diarrhea and belly pain do sound like IBS, but bleeding in between periods could point to something such as ovarian cysts or fibroids or something like that. I would go back and get the bleeding checked out.

Did they ever scan your belly? That is a good way of picking up things.

As regards your IBS, try adding Metamucil twice daily to your diet. This is a water soluble fiber supplement and should help regulate your bowels. Take it with plenty of water though. You could also add a stool softener such as sodium docusate and also try eating some live yogurt or taking some Acidophilis caps - probiotics that contain lactobacillis which is the good bacteria to rebalance your system. This should help with your gas and bloating. If you take the caps, keep them in the fridge, take them on an empty belly and don't take with hot drinks, as the heat kills bacteria. They can be taken twice daily, morning and evening before meals.

Good luck

I also agree. It sounds like you have IBS, but you may have another problem too. I didn't want to beleave that I had IBS and I kept telling my doc that I didn't think that is what I have. But final i'm just trying to deal with it. It is a problem that there is not easy fix for and a problem that people that don't have it just don't understand <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/frown.gif">

Sarah and Princess Purr--

Although I never had an ultrasound, I agree that I may have fibroids or cysts. I voiced this concern to my PA. She did a pelvic and said that I was probably just suffering from the IBS. However, if the bleeding does not stop after my next cyle, I will either call my doctor or visit a new one.

I did add Citrucel twice daily to my diet. This is helping but now my tummy is so bloated late at night. I may drop one dose and see how it goes. Thanks for the advice regarding the Acidophilis caps and yogurt. I am going to give both a try.

Thanks again!

How old are you? Could it be endometriosis? Endometriosis mimics alot of IBS symptoms, and includes other gynecological symptoms. Cannot be detected my exam, ultrasound, or any lab tests. Only way to find is laparoscopy. Just a thought.

I too am going through a medical nightmare. I have yet to get a dx. I am all the same symptoms, consistent lower abdominal pain, severe bloating and pain from bloating, heaviness in abdomen, gas, pressure in bowels, some constipation, etc. I have seen two internists, my gyno and a gastro, had blood panels, U/S, abd CAT scan, etc. Still nothing. Going to see a second Gastroenterologist for a second opinion. They still havent even diagnosed me with IBS, let alone anything else. They just say, "we dont know." I am at my wits end!!!

Have you considered food intolerances? Maybe worth getting tested if you have stomach pains and bloating.

Try taking Acidophilis caps to helps with the bloating. It will help re-colonise you the good bacteria in your gut.

Super Sarah and Andy--

Thanks for your responses. However, earlier this week, I found that I was misdiagnosed with IBS. Lately, there has been a lot of exposure in our local newspaper about the CA-125 blood test...this is a step in diagnosing ovarian cancer. I had the test done and my level was at 450. I was diagnosed with cancer and will begin radical treatment on Monday. Had I of been aware that IBS mimics the symptoms of ovarian cancer, you could be sure that I would have had the test done much earlier. I had never heard of CA-125 testing until reading the articles in the newspaper.

If any females read this posting, please make sure you have this test done to rule out cancer of the ovaries. If your insurance won't pay for it (United Healthcare does not!), pay for it yourself. It cost a little over $100...obviously well worth it.

I am so sorry to hear the horrible news. How are you handling this? Are you ok? What is your prognosis? Do you have a support system? Is there anything I can do? What was your doctors response to their serious misdiagnosis??

Please reply, we are all concerned about you.
