Please Help, I am a 33 year old male who has had various stomache pain for the last 5 years, in 2000 I had the following tests, Upper GI, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, Abdominal Ct, Abdominal X, Chest X ray ray numerous ultrasounds and Bloodwork. 2 duodenal ulcers were found and treated for H Pylori as well I have GERD and diagnosed with IBS and treat it with Pantoloc as needed. In 2001 I had another upper GI and Endoscope 4 months ago to ensure no ulcers present. 4 weeks ago I started getting more intense pain in the upper stomache and alot of Nausea(No vomit) which eases off a bit when I lie down and sometimes when I go to the bathroom, but not always. I went to my GP and Gastro Doc and they did another ultrasound and CBC which were ok. They both say that I have IBS and the Nausea is just another newer symptom made worst by anxiety and depression. The only test I have not had is A barium follow through of the small intestine which they are both against due to radiation exposure and they say I have nothing to worry about due to the recent endoscope covers the main area of the small intestine(Duodenum) which tumours usually occur in. Recent Ultrasound and Bloodwork are all ok. is there anything else I can do, if it is just IBS it really sucks, the pain and Nausea are increasing my Anxiety.

Hi Markr,
I have been a volunteer moderator for the past 6 months and I'm no expert about GI problems but I have had Gastro Problems for a long time and have been posting on this board since November,1999.

I moved the Topic "Worth Reading for IBS'er" if you haven't --I suggest you read the first message "Bowels in an Uproar" it is a good summary of IBS.
You mentioned all the tests that you have had conducted but you didn't say what meds the doctors were treating you with. There is a diet for GERD--you can click on : http://www.gicare.com/pated/edtgs03.htm
Hope this helps---Harry

Thanks for the response Harry, I take Pantoloc as needed for the GERD but nothing for IBS. I tried Dicetel last year but it did not help. My symptoms for the last 8 hours have somewhat subsided for the 1st time in 4 weeks and I am keeping my fingers crossed they go away. I am still contemplating the small intestine bowel series but with all of the other tests I have had the doctors say I dont need it.

HI there. It could be possible that you have a hiatus hernia. They cause upper stomach pain and nausea. It causes your upper stomach to bloat and put pressure on your stomach and chest. All the barium swallows, ultrasound, upper GIs, etc, did not show that I had anything wrong with me. At last I had a lastroscopy (tube down stomach while asleep), and it finally showed I had a hiatus hernia and a raw stomach from acid.

Give it a try!

I do have gerd which is caused by a hiatus hernia, that was confirmed with my upper GI and endoscope, thanks for the response. My symptoms have eased a little in the last 48 hours and I am still contemplating the barium meal to look at the small intestine, although my doctors dont feel i dont need it due to all the other tests and radiation i have already had from x rays and ct scans. Endoscopy and colonoscopy do cover some of the small intestine but not all of it. They found 2 ulcers in my duodenum which is the first part of the small intestine which i cleard some time ago and I was just re-scoped in late March and all was ok, they insist gerd and IBS are to blame for the misery i constantly endure.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I have decided to be on the safe side and have the barium followthrough this Thursday as I still have unexplained Nausea and upper abdominal pain.

Ok I got the barium followthrough and if I might say the barium tastes like **** and I had to drink 3 cups of it!, now the difficult part is waiting for the results, 2-3 business days which means I will probably have to wait past the weekend. If there is nothing there then I have severe IBS because tests have ruled out anything else.
