Hi,

I know this is going to seem like a really funny question, but those of you with IBS and other stomach problems, how long do you routinely spend in the toilet at times when your stomach is bad?

I only ask as at times when my stomach was really bad I would find that I could spend at least 30 mins sitting on the toilet in one go. This was not because I really wanted to, but just because I just could not finish going in anything under that amount of time. If this has happened to you, then I really do understand what it is like. I have been there myself.

Good luck

Hi, Sarah. As far as my bathroom time, it's relatively short - no more than 60 seconds to up to about 10 minutes (if I haven't gone by then, I'm not going to). But because my IBS is primarily "D", I can make 4-5 trips in a 15 minute period, which can be really upsetting, and then get my stomach in more turmoil. I've had great relief with Colestid, so my trips are much less frequent.

Hi sarah
I can and have spent upto and beyound an hour!!! I have never felt entirely cleaned out except with Golytely (my god THAT was an experience) but when I go on an average day i am making a supreme effort to only be there for under 10 mins. I know that may seem far too long to most people but baby steps right? already I have noticed that my hemmoroids have decreased in size etc!
I find I need at least 2-3 minutes to focus and try to open my bowels, you know relax... 'course with a 2 yearold and two dogs constantly visiting me its not that easy to do <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/wink.gif">

Hey, I usually have ten minutes or so in the morning -- very painful. Then later in the day, if I'm sick again it can be much longer. There have been nights, though, where I've just brought my pillow into the bathroom with me and slept on the bathmat!

Hey, I was wondering if I could bring this up here -- it's kinda related and also kind of weird, too. I notice when my IBS is bad higher up (stomach and upper intestines) I have to pee A LOT. It's so strange. I have to pee more than your average person anyway, but when I have the nausea and vomiting or the general discomfort I crown myself the Pee Queen! You'd think I'd be dehydrated, but you'd never be able tell from my urine!

Hi,

It can be that perhaps as your IBS is bad that you are retaining fluid that you are getting rid of when it flares up. It's a possibility.

Anyway, good news. My bathroom visits are back to normal now. I had a severe stomach infection just this week and spent the best part of two days sitting on the toilet - no fun though and not because I wanted to either. Anyway, I am still feeling totally wiped out, but I think my stomach is better thank goodness.

Take care

Sarah

its the strangest thing isn't? these tummy infections and food poisonings episodes seem like hell at the time but they really really clean you out and seem to reset our inner clocks.... I actually look forward to a good bout of vomiting and diarreah every so often to help reset my system.... any one else ever notice this type of thing?

No, having just had a severe stomach infection, I never want to go through that experience for a long time to come. Basically, I did not vomit, but had severe stomach pains and spent most of one whole night sitting on the toilet with diarrhea that just poured out of me. I also had a fever.

I do not call that fun in the slightest. I was actually so unwell that I had to call an emergency doc out at 2 am in the morning and when he saw the state of me, he said that he really wanted me to go to the ER. I refused flatly and luckily he relented, but not before giving me injections for pain and antibiotics. I had to spend the whole of the next day in bed and luckily never got a yeast infection, as I started to take Acidophilis caps just in time and with the antibiotics.

I have just about recovered now, so no, I never look forward to infections like this at all, as I have been so unwell with it.

Well, I am at least booked in to have a colonic irrigation on Moday to help get rid of all the infection and have no lasting stomach problems.

Try Immodim advance, it's new and helps.

Thanks for that, but I don't have diarrhea anymore and even if I did, I would not take Immodium anyway. Immodium can constipate you very badly and if you have an infection, it could take you longer to get rid of it, as if you stop the diarrhea it also stops the infection getting out. Thanks, but no thanks.
