I have IBS (diarrhea kind) and lactose intolerance. I also have horrible lettuce and raw leafy green intolerance. It started when I was 30 and has been going on for almost 4 yrs. I can't eat any salad, anythign with even a sliver of lettuce on it, within hours I have the most painful cramps bloating and diarrhea, it's the worst with lettuce and raw greens than with any other foods that give me IBS. Is this lettuce intolerance just another part of the IBS? OR is it something worse? I've never actually gone to a stomach dr about these probs.Thanks.

Hi Forester,
Welcome to healthboards. Several books I've read say that people that have IBS are also have intolerances to one or more foods. So, I guess this is normal and not unusual. You know alot of green leafy veggies are treated with nitrates to preserve their freshness and crispness. And, many people are very sensitive to these additives and have to go to unusual measures to wash these veggies to get rid of the residue. Particular those packaged and ready to serve types as well as salad bars.

It would be interesting if you bought some alfalfa or barley grass tablets from a health food store and see if you are really intolerant the content in these???

I hope you find an answer to your problem!!
