I have had mild IBS for a few months now. Most of my symptoms are cramping, bloating, constipation and occastional mucus in my stool. I know that clear mucus is normal for some IBS sufferers, but I had an occasion last week where the mucus was faintly pink. My first reaction is to assume that this is blood. Is this normal? It has only happened once and it has not occured since, but I wonder if I should see a Dr. about this. Please let me know.

Hi,
IBS does not produce a pink stool or mucus but some foods can cause mucus to be sligtly pink and of course if you feel uneasy or anxious about your problem ---Go see Your Doctor.

I am a big believer in using a water soluble fiber supplement like Metamucil or Citrucel.It is a safe bulk stool forming agent that can be taken daily. Just start off slow and increase the dose until you have gentle bowel movements without staining. Make sure you drink enough water!! This not only keeps you regular but it has a good healthy cleaning effect in your Colon that reduces mucus, hemorrhoids, rectal fissures and diverticular pockets. As you know all of these cause problems that you just don't need in your Life.

God Bless---Harry

I would get it checked out. You will see that I have posted here for a while with constipation problems that came on suddenly. I was recently diagnosed with a parasite. The advice I believe here is sound, but get one or two solid medical opinions first. Especially if this is a new thing. (any change in habits should be investigated ! I had to challenge my doctor to run tests..he was sure all I needed was fiber...my *** . (no pun intended) You know your body dont let anyone tell you differently) This post is not to say this board isnt useful infact its nice to have a community that understands the problems and issues. But it is no subsitution for a tests and accurate diagnosis. I am posting this in the hope that people wont go through the crap (no pun again I went through . (almost 6 months of guesswork) And above all keep a sense of humor its good for the soul

Actually mucous in the stool IS IBS. I have that every day, sometimes JUST a lot of mucous. I went to a specialist and had a colonoscopy a few years back and the DR said it was IBS. I have had it for almost ten years.

VagasGirl,
IBS is a very common functional Gastro disorder that affects about 20% of the US population.
A group of Doctors(international) as well as other professionals that work with IBS and other GI problems met in Rome, Italy and came up with diagnostic criteria for these disorders. They developed and classified symptoms based on reviewing research, studies and the general group agreement that is outlined in a book-- "The Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders" edited By Dr.Douglas Drossman,MD , published in 1994 and has since been revised.

The Rome Diagostic Criteria for IBS as well as all other GI disorders is contained in the book.
The following is a summary for IBS:
At least 3 months of chronic or recurrent symptoms of:
1 Pain or discomfort mostly in the lower abdomen that is;

a. Relieved with BM and/or;
b. Associated with a change in BM frequency--and/or;
c. Associated with a change in the consistency (diarrhea or constipation ---softer or harder)

2. Two or more of the following on at least 1/4 days or times/occasions:

a. Altered BM frequency(i.e.altered means more than 3 BMs a day or fewer than 3 BMs a week)

b. Altered stool formation --lumpy and hard or loose and watery.

c. Stool passage ---urgent or straining or incomplete feeling after BM.

d. Passage of mucus(white material) during a BM.

e. Bloating or feeling of abdominal fullness or distention.

Some symptoms may be more predominant than others such as diarrhea or constipation but mucus alone is not IBS.

If you want more details do a search on ***********---- There is more info there than you probably want to read.

Take Care & God Bless---Harry
