When I have my period, my intestines become extremely sensitive, and like it's going to go into a spasms. (I have the type of IBS where you can have painful spasms for no reason) Anyway, any women out there who's IBS gets worse during their period?

Hi, chinadoll. I have had trouble with IBS for over 20 years, primarily the big D. In the last few months, my diarrhea is terrible just a few days before my period, all during it, and a couple days afterward. My menstrual cramps are also getting worse. I currently take Bentyl 20mg 1-2 times daily for IBS, and will up the dose to 4 times daily during my period per the doc's recommendation. I'll see if it helps. I still get diarrhea even on the Bentyl and with calcium supplements, but it's less than it used to be. Sometimes, I'm even constipated. However, I dread that time of the month, because I know cramping, and uncontrolled diarrhea will be my way of life every month. Good luck to you.

Mine was worse before my period. Now that I am on Levbid and have been for over two years, it's not AS bad. I dont get the big "D" but it's very very soft and thats an inconvenience, but at least there's no paing involved anymore. It used to be so bad before the meds that I would actually feel like somone was stabbing up my rear and through my back! Now, its nothing like that.

My IBS definitely gets worse during my period, but it's something I sort of count on, unfortunately. I have C type--I just went a month without going at all--and usually the first day of my period brings on a heavy bm.

I also tend to get stabbing pain in my back that shoots down to my leg that gets much much worse when I'm having my period.

Anyone else have similar symptoms?

Yeppers! I also always count on the cramping and the heavy bm before my period and the first or second day sometimes. And YES, I too have gone a month without a bm. It's no wonder I look pregnant a week out of the month, not to mention why I gain 5-7 lbs before my period between no bm for 3 weeks and the water gain from PMS! Ugh! Levbid really did help though. It's not NEARLY as bad as it used to be. In fact, those stabbing pains I rarely get anymore and they were BAD! I almost called an ambulance once because of those pains. I was crying and it was horrible! I feel ya!

I was told that my IBS gets worse close and during my period due to a hormone that drops before your period. I feel more regular because Im normally constipated.

Cramps definitely get worse. So much that I would have to stay home from school. One of my main symptoms is nausea and that also got really bad during my period.
I can't say anything helped except a heaping handful of midol. lol
