Hi,

My sister has been diagnosed with IBS and is also suffering with some rectal bleeding.

She is wondering if anyone else has had this symptom and if it is related to IBS in any way.

She is going for some tests on Wednesday but just wanted to know if it was common or not.

Thanks
Carole-Anne (worried sister)

Hi Carole-Anne,

Rectal bleeding can be due to a number of causes, the most common being hemmorhoids(sp?) and fissures bleeding. Sometimes it is due to ulcers... If the blood is bright red, it indicates that the blood is probably from near the end of the colon (ie possibly hemmorhoids)... Darker colors indicate occult blood, which means it is coming from higher up. A stool test should be done ASAP, just to be on the safe side. It is always advisable to visit a doctor if bleeding occurs... Well, I hope this helps.

Cheers, Raju.
