Hi, I am new to the IBS topic board but not new to the Health Boards. I have Fibromyalgia, MYofasical Pain, Migraines, and other problems. I was told I have IBS too after many GI tests. Anyways, I have been waking up really early(I can't sleep well) I have bad cramping pain in my lower abdomen and I rush to the bathroom and need to have a bowel movement which is not firm yet not Diarrhea either. What is strange is I get up go back to bed and within minutes I have to do this three or more times. (Pain starts, I go to the bathroom, have a bowel movement and it happens again). So I need advice. Whats going on. Is this IBS. My other digestive symptoms are, fullness after eating small amounts, pain after eating, sometimes diarrhea right after I eat, nausea and stomach pain alot. My stools sometimes contain undigested food, mucous and sometimes strange color stools occur too. I am sorry to talk graphic about this but I thought I'd at least ask before going to the Doctor and adding to my mess of other problems. Thanks, Raven

Hi Raven,

You could probably ask your doctor if you can try some questran (prescription). It absorbs bile, and a little bit of vitamins (so take supplements) - but it might help from your description. You may have to play around with how much you need to help you with the almost D situation. It may also help with the wierd coloured stools. It is my personal theory that nausea can be caused by bile backing up a little, when large quantities are produced - that may be helped as well.

Of course, don't avoid the well spoken for yogourt or acidophilus caps to help repopulate your intestines with good bacteria.

Cheers, Raju.

Raju,( I like your name!)
Thanks for the info. I'll try anything. I forgot to mention that I had my Gall Bladder out in Dec( a day after X-mas) and it didn't need to come out(Long story) and I have Leaky Gut too. Its not too bad but has anyone had problems like mine associated with LG? It didn't seem like I had new symptoms after the Gall Bladder removal except it was a horrible experience. I'd appreciate any info. I know that only a Doctor can give me the DX but learning all I can on the subject really helps. Its hard to figure out what is causing it since I have several problems. Yet It is interesting to hear from others about these two conditions. Again thanks, Raven <p>[This message has been edited by Raven (edited 08-16-2002).]

Hi, Raven. I agree with Raju. I've had trouble with IBS-D for many years, which worsened after 2 different abdominal surgeries. Finally I found out about Colestid and my life is WONDERFUL!!! I still have BM's in the a.m. like usual, but now they're formed, not watery. Keep going to your doc until you get answers. I still get abdominal cramps from my IBS, but at least I'm not having the diarrhea. I also take calcium supplemlents, fiber wafers, a multivitamin and acidophilus capsules.

Good luck,
Katie G

Ohhhhh I have those problems too. Yep I think that is IBS. I wake up with bad tummy aches and have to run to the bathroom. Normally around three times every morning. Color is normally the same but there is mucus.

Never posted to a BBS before, but I read your post & I have same problem! Woke up 1-1/2 years ago with, what I thought, was intestinal flu (severe diarrhea). Have not had a normal BM since. Have gone through every GI test available (all normal), taken everything from depression meds (though I never felt depressed, just felt sick) to probiotics. Nothing has worked yet.
My body clock is totally out of whack--get up at 4:00 am every day needing to go to the bathroom, then am in there (back and forth every 15 mins) for the next 2-1/2 hours. I don't eat breakfast. Through the day, I don't usually have to go (but sometimes have to after lunch). I haven't lost weight, but don't enjoy eating & usually only eat small portions. My problem is markedly worse in the morning. I seem to be able to hold only 1 meal at a time. Haven't been out to dinner, on vacation with others, or dated anyone because I'm too embarrassed to reveal this problem. Because I'm up so early, I'm exhausted by 7pm, so have, basically, no social life. I used to be really active & social and now I'm a hermit. It really sucks. If anyone else out there has found something that helps, please post.

Hi, HomeAlone. Have you talked to your doctor about your early a.m. BM's? Sounds like IBS, and like you, I would have a.m. BM'S (sometimes 4 loose, watery or runny stools within a 15 minute period and be done for the day). Other times, I'd have the loose stools in the morning, and then again right after lunch. After many tears, humiliation, and research on the 'net, I found out about Colestid (prescription med), and my doctor was willing to give it a try when I had repeatedly gone to him for relief from my IBS. For the past 8 months or so, my life has not revolved around being close to a bathroom, worrying about what would happen at work (and yes, I've had to leave work if I had an "accident") or avoiding social activities. I feel so good about it that I hope I can continue taking Colestid forever if it will give me a normal life with formed stools. Talk to your doctor or see a GI specialist for some answers.

Good luck to you,
Katie G

Homealone you sound just like me!!!!!!!! Luckly I found the hubby before my IBS got really bad. By the time it started to acted up we had already been dating for over a year and I didnt mind talking to him about it. It took him a very very long time to understand though. When I said I had to go, it really ment like now....we have to leave NOW. He is wonderful about it today. He understands that concerts, eating out and trips just aren't going to happen until I can get this under control. He is even willing to work two jobs so I can stay home and try to get better.(my job is giving me problems for calling out so much). Hopefully you will get your IBS under control and find someone that will understand your problem when it does acted up.

Thanks to you all for the replies. I honestly wasn't sure if people would reply. I am sorry it has took me awhile to get back to you all. I have been very sick with this and Fibro. The IBS Pain/cramps have gotten worse, especially after meals. I have such problems with severe pain and not knowing if I will make it to the bathroom, that I am staying home a lot more( I don't want to have an accident) I notice the pain comes on fast and it doesn't go away right after a bowel movement. I am also noticing a sharper pain right where I had my gall bladder out( the top insision). My husband is always asking whats wrong. My early morning problem seems to happen almost every morning now. I am scared! I go to the Doc on Friday the 6th. I sure hope I can get relief or I may lose it. I can't handle this especially added to all my other problems! Even my daughter crys for me
(cuz she hears me in the bathroom moaning) Any more info is welcome, wish me luck. And I wish the best for you all who are suffering with this terrible problem. God Bless you and keep in touch. Luv Raven!!!!!!

HomeAlone,

When you said that you woke with severe diarrhea one morning and thought you had stomach flu and have never been right since, did you ever go see a doc about it? If you did, did you ever have a stool culture sent to see if there was anything causing it? It is just that possibly in your case, a simple dose of antibiotics could clear it up for you, as you may still have some bacteria affecting your gut and have still not got rid of your stomach bug properly. Bacterial stomach bugs can stick around and can be very nasty. Also, you should also consider parasitic infection if you have been abroad.

Raven - Try the prescription drug Questran or Colestid. That is good for mopping up bile following a GB removal. Unfortunately, diarrhea such as yours following a GB removal can be quite common, as the bile is still being produced and without the GB it has nowhere to go, so to speak and ends of hanging around inside the bowels, giving you a nasty belly ache and diarrhea. Also, try adding Metamucil twice daily. It's a water soluble fiber supplement that can help bulk up your system. Don't forget the live yogurt/Acidophilis caps either to re-colonise your gut flora. Good diet, plenty of fruit and veg and cut out caffeine, soda and junk food if you can and plenty of fluid too.

Ginger, Peppermint tea and Aloe juice can be quite soothing for the belly.

Also, if you find that conventional medicine is not working for you, be prepared to give the alternatives a go, such as acupuncture and homeopathy. Good homeopathic remedies for a sore belly and diarrhea are Arsenicum and Nux Vomica. Either of these remedies work well, but if one does not work well for you, then try the other and that should. Arsenicum is better for a sore belly with diarrhea and Nux is better for a sore belly with constipation and can work better if this occurs shortly after eating.

Good luck and I hope you all eventually find something that works for you.
