View Full Version : Serious Problem May need feeding tube

I have a really serious problem. My husband as some may recall from past posts had Post Polio Syndrom. He developed some really disturbing eliminating problems in the past couple years. He is 64 years old. He can't eat any more because it is too painful for him to eliminate his food. He sits on the toilet and nothing happens. He was told to take Miralax by one gastroendorologist an that is what started his weight problem. He just had diareah so much he could not get regular and lost weight. I took him elsewhere and they gave him Colace stool softeners along with Enulose and each day he has to take a suppository glycerine upon wakening. He was even in the hospital in May and they found NOTHING! Two MRI's and $35,000.00 later, Nothing! So we went home and figured he would have to live with the pain.

The pain comes when his bowels begin contracting. He sits on the toilet several times a day. He cannot walk as he has always been in a wheelchair. He drinks lots of water but that is a problem because it fills him up too much. He weighed 99 pounds in May.

Yesterday I took him to his primary care and he said, gee, you look GREAT! I said, oh yeah? I lifted his sweatshirt and the doctor gasped. He said Oh My God, you may need a feeding tube. At least until you get your nutricianal needs met.

Today, I was suppose to go to the gastroendorolgist. But when I saw on the paper who they gave me I saw it was a physcians assistant. Not good. I will cancel. Book again.

I never heard of anything like this in my life. Someone said that it would be best if my husband took. ACIDPHILOUS to help his body move his bowels.

Any input in any way...please!

Hi babesbarn,
I recall your messages last January and had wondered how your husband was doing. Sorry that He is not doing well. As you know it take fiber and water to make your bowels move. You also need to move around but I know in your husbands case that is impossible.

The best form of Lactobacillus Acidophilus that I have ever used is Probiotica--- it is put out by the same Company that makes Imodium and Tylenal and they work.

Probiotica is Lactobacillus Reuteri and is made from mother's milk. It like all acidophilus products on the market is suppose to help re-establish proper intestinal bacteria but I could never tell I was taking anything with other brands. But,with Probiotica---It helped only after two dose to relieve gas and cramping pain. You can buy it at Wal Mart. I think it is the best acidophilus type product to come on the market in many years. I think it may be worth a try.

God Bless You and Your Husband <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif">

In two days we saw three doctors. Three who each look at their area with most concern. Unfortunately when one helps their area the other doctor does not approve as it could interfer with their area. So, what do I do. Weed through and do what I think best. The first doctor said a feeding tube would be best for nutritianal purposes even if short term. The gastroendorologist said, no my husband eats from his mouth and no need for that. He has no muscle mass so his fat will never be seen. Polio. He has been tested more times than the rockets to the moon. They look to ME! What do I think since I am with him all day. Leave the best judgement to ME.
So since I feel like Doctor Babe...
I said, perhaps, his weight loss is IBS related. Irrital Bowel Syndrome. Severe Pain Could come from that and his symtoms arrive most at stress levels. Since he lost his job his usual post polio syndrom pain and arthritis have excelerated. When you are already tense your bowels tighten and for some get constipated and others get diarreah.
The stomach doctor said it sounds like I could be right so he ordered a antispasmatic called DICLCLOMINE 10mg. Said, use as needed. Ok, maybe I can fatten him up too by lessening his water intake.

Water intake. UROLOGIST...Upset with that! No he said, he will urinate less with that DICYCLOMINE and he will polute his urine. he needs water. I said, look, you told him to drink 8-8oz glasses of water a day and it has no nutritional content. It fills him up and now he is skin and bones. Less than 99pds. He is starving. Urologist ordered some test but I know that test is fine plus a microscopic urine analasye (sp) So he said, also, Beverly you do a good job, but I am afraid of him taking that medicine.

So, what do I do? I have to weed through every piece of information and do what I feel is best. My Husband trusts me. I only ask GOd for Guidance.
I purchased the medicine and I also got this stuff you told me about ACIDOPHILUS. The druggist winked and said Good stuff. Smart lady. So for now, he had a peaceful night sleep.

As for me, I suffer from Caregivers stress. Thanks you and for everyones well wishes and help.

For six days my husband has been taking four ACIDOPHILUS per day. It has helped tremendously in moving his bowels! That takes the pressure off his intestines. Having a spine that is severly curved due to polio scoliosis, who knows where his organs are. They shifted so much it is hard to say this is this or that. But I am going to try the probiotica for him. He still has cramps.

The gastroendorologist said he has no muscle mass so I cannot expect to much in his body looking normal in weight. However he is drinking far to much water because he is not eating as much..hence no nutrition. The urologist was upset when he found out he has to drink less water. I think this board is better than a doctor. I presented some solutions to the doctors that I recieved from this board and was told they were great ideas. DUHHHHHHH! I did not say where I got the information but I sure seemed smart. sometimes you just gotta take charge. Thanks so much!

You know Doctors go to school to learn how to treat illness and problems with drugs/medicine and what is so unfortunenate is they seem to never learn about how to take care of the whole person. I think they have become too specialized!! I am convinced that you have be very active in your health care. Some Doctors welcome your suggestions while others become sort of offened. But,the information age is changing alot of things for the better!!

God Bless---Harry
