View Full Version : I hate my doctor... what can I do? (more complicated question than you think!) :)

My doctor diagnosed me with IBS and she gave me some very weak medicine which is completely innefective. She keeps telling me there is nothing I can do about it and refuses to give me any medication or let me do any more tests. There is so much I want to try (acidophilus tablets and some other medicines in case that does not help) and a few other tests I would like to take (the LEAP thingy sounds interesting) but she simply brushes it off and thinks I know nothing. She's apparently brainwashed my mom with her crap because my mom is being pretty dumb about it to and thinks that the doctor knows best, which is wrong in this case.

I know IBS is not curable, but she does not even allow me to try some treatment. I'm not asking for hardcore testing and medication.

Anyway, my question is, how can I talk to a different doctor or get a prescription without going through my mom? I am only 17 and will not be 18 for another six months, is there anything I can do? Or am I powerless in the fact that I can not schedule my own tests and appointments with doctors under my parents insurance plan? All advice is appreciated.

I know how you feel, for over 3 1/2 years i have been ignored medically but everytime i see my doctor he just stares at me, he sent me for a scan and the doctor there played it down as i have nothing wrong, they make you feel stupid and unworthy. i am still trying to get a result..my so called neurologist put me through hell (even the nurse gave him daggers) he then described me as being 12 years older than i am and i felt like i had wasted more time, my doctor now claims there is only one neurosurgeon? i hate nhs at the mo.

Ah I fully understand what you mean, when it comes to IBS doctors really seem to be totally uncompassionate and don't really offer anything more then "heres some pills that may or may not work, enjoy your life" I really hated my gastro doctor cause of how stupid he made me feel, right before he retired he called me antisocial and that no doctor would ever want me as a patient. Id say look for a new specialist, it may take awhile to get a new one but ask your family doctor if she/he can make a referral out and start calling doctors to see if they are accepting new patients. Rate mds is a great site that may help you find a good caring doctor. Sometimes doctors dont know best and its up to you to figure out what works for you. Start a food diary to find out trigger foods, look up vitamins that may help (peppermint oil is awesome!). Unfortunately your mom just doesnt understand how frustrating ibs really is, the tests say theres nothing wrong but theres something really wrong.
