View Full Version : IBS after gall bladder removal

Curious what others experiences have been. I had my gall bladder removed in late 2007. A few weeks later, I started having serious GI issues - lots of #2 accidents and literally running to the bathroom. I've kept a journal and there doesn't seem to be any trigger. Sometimes, I'm having an emergency and I haven't even eaten anything. I know the diarrhea is common while the body adjusts to no longer having a gall bladder but usually corrects itself after 6 months. It didn't for me. It got to the point that I wouldn't travel with anyone else in the car and I avoided going anywhere I wouldn't have a bathroom to run too. I was diagnosed with IBS by a GI doctor last year but he did no tests to confirm this. He said my symptoms made him believe this was my problem but that most people, as they get older, get better. Don't I hope this is true. Anyway, he prescribed Welchol and it has helped, provided I take it. If I forget a dose or two, I'm running to the bathroom again. I'm just wandering if this is ever going to get better. It's just a matter of time before I have an accident in front of someone (other than my husband and son - that's already happened) and I will be truly mortified. I rarely have a normal movement, it's either very hard because of the Welchol or it's diarrhea but I only rarely have cramping anymore. I do have Multiple Sclerosis which can cause bowel issues so, at this point, I don't know if it's IBS the MS or a combination of both.
