I'm wondering how much hospital chaplains or other spiritual/pastoral care workers know about you. How much of your medical records/file/history are they privy to? Do they know what surgery or procedure you are having on that day? Other conditions you might have?

Thanks.

They know nothing - at least not here in the US - unless you tell them. Of course, they can ssurmise a lot since they work in a hospital and understand notices on the doors of rooms, etc. But no, they do not look at your chart.

OK thanks Titchou! I heard that in some hospitals the spiritual care people have a list of patients with only your name and the procedure/surgery you're having, nothing else. I guess there is some variation. But it seems they know very little, I suppose because they can do their jobs without knowing more than that info. Thanks.

If you are concerned about that, you could ask the particular hospital about their policy.
