    Post Ulnar shortening pain

Hi again all. I am 4 months post op after having a standard USO. Doc removed 4mm of bone and plated on the outside. The good news is the pain I had become so used to as a result of UIS has subsided but as I recover, i note new aches and pains which I don't like. Since the day after the op i have had quite agonising pain in my elbow. At no point did I have any above elbow immobilisation. All short arm casts for about 7 weeks in all. The pain has improved but still there and worsens when I straighten my arm - leaving me in a constant state of holding my elbow at 90.

Has anyone else had this after USO? If not - did you have above elbow casts/splints? If so, what was it like and did it subside???

The other problem I am having is when i try to pronate my arm (to get my palm facing down). It feels like as the ulna and radius cross with the twist, the screw(s) which protrude through the ulna, seems to be catching on the radius. it is very sore and most of the time stops me pronating.

If you have experienced anything like this please let me know whether it got better. i am already getting worried that the op has caused some kind of issue with my elbow and also that I will have to have plate removed. not part of the plan at all!!

Thanks in advance for your help.

    James

I had 4 mm removed too. I was in a short-arm cast for 6 weeks.

I never had any elbow pain. Could they have irritated a nerve?

I had huge problems with supination. Months of PT and my progress stalled well short of 'normal'. I ended up seeking a second opinion from a specialist I found who had done a Mayo clinic hand fellowship. He pointed out my plate had come loose. About 7 months post-surgery, I had surgery for that and had some debridement done. It was short healing from the plate removal. I just had a wrap for a week. I started PT after the stitches came out. From there, I regained full pronation and supination quite quickly. The ulnar pain that had remained post my first surgery also healed well after that too.

I did find the plate didn't have much 'fat' over it and will get cold quite quickly in the winter.

I wish you well in healing.

I am having issues with rotating my wrist as well, I cant hold a plate or much w/o dropping things. My dr wants to serial cast to help pronation since the splint is $900 to fix it.

Hello... I was just typing in random things on google that I could try and explain my pains that are excruciating that where never there after my ulna shortening and TFCC tear in my wrist. It's be 7 months since my surgery and these pains haven't been there until about five days ago.. The first day It started I just noticed a pain hit me that was different and it continued to slowly get worse.. And yesterday was day four and that's when it got the worst.. The pain set in above where my whole surgery was like yoh said in your elbow... That is very painful but yet I've got the pain throughout my whole forearm and when I turn my wrist counterclockwise I get that same pain you explained... Also my
Wrist pain just like I had before the surgery where my tear was is also killing me and when I cup my bad wrist"right" with my left hand firmly around it and the joint and squeeze it just pops and crackles over and over.. I'm very worried because I know this shouldn't be normal... And I don't want to have to be out of work again to be worked on or re opened. Also I've been having pains randomly up into my shoulder since about a month after my surgery.. Sometimes this gets very irritating to. Please let me know anyone and anything please

I actually just got put back into my splint yesterday (great!) after 16 weeks post-op. My whole entire ulnar side of my arm hurts extremely bad, and it hurts MUCH worse if I carry something over like three pounds, or rotate it wrong. Also, weirdly, I've been having TFCC pains again.

    Re: Post Ulnar shortening pain

I had that TFCC pain post-op. Very frustrating. Once I had my plate removed and some debridement, the TFCC area healed well and my pain resolved.

My surgeon kept telling me he had fixed me and nothing was wrong when I complained of the pain. I found an expert second opinion and he found the plate was a bit loose which he said could cause the same pain.

Also, rehab was difficult and I got 'stuck' not being able to supinate. I regained my ROM within a couple months after the plate removal too.

I hope you find some relief with the casting.

    Re: Post Ulnar shortening pain

    Hi guys,

I injured my wrist with one punch, trying to get fit and doing boxersize boot camp boxing in 2012.
I had surgery May 16, since I'm in more pain and still taking painkillers that everyone wants me off, bar me cause I'm suffering.
I have only felt a slight benefit post surgery, I also now suffer with pain along the plate site up to my elbow. God help me if I manage to hit my elbow on anything.
My specialist was going to do two parts to my op and send an arthoscope in and see what was going on, though decided not too.
I'm now getting conflicting information from DR to the pain clinic that want's me off my meds.
I'm able to work and have full use of my arm and wrist, though I do it through pain.
I'm a horticulturist so I do alot of hard labor and I don't think changing jobs will save me any.
