    Unhappy Anyone recommend cortisone injections?

My husband has been suffering with a pain in his right arm for a few months now.he saw the doctor and he diagnosed it as tennis elbow,he did do a lot of fence painting in the summer, the doc has suggested a cortisone injection in the elbow, just wondering if anyone has had one and are they of any benefit as I've read some horror stories where the pain has been twice as bad afterwards?

The cortisone injection into the elbow is going to hurt real bad. Cortisone usually will help only for about 6 weeks.
A good osteopath, which is an alternative bone specialist, would be of great help to your husband & I suggest you try hard to find one.

    Re: Anyone recommend cortisone injections?

I had a great experience with Cortisone shots. Yes, they hurt, but for me only for a minute...once the cortisone is injected the pain stopped from the shot..

The relief I found lasted about 5 months, my second shot lasted just as long..the third shot only 3 months. Steroids stop working when you do them too often.

I would think that everyone would react differently to the shot. Its not likely to hurt worse from it, because its just a steroid. The only thing that might hurt worse is the initial soreness in the injection area, which goes away in a day or two....steroids do not help some people, but that might be the worse thing your husband might have happen, that he just doesnt get any relief.

Id give it a try. He really doesnt have anything to lose.....

    Re: Anyone recommend cortisone injections?

I have had cortisone shots twice, once in my shoulder about 25 years ago and the other in my big toe about 10-12 years ago. Both times have been very effective and I have never had another in either spot. The shoulder had been dx as bursitis and the toe as arthritis.
But as someone else stated it is different for everyone. I wish your husband well and a speedy recovery with no pain.

Hello, I too have tennis elbow, and have not had any cortisone injections for all the reasons you have heard. What I just started trying is a natural oil supplement called Deep Blue. It seems to be helping so far (on my 5th day), and use it 3 times a day drop each time. Please do you research though, it is expensive and cost me $38 for 5 ml. It can be diluted also.

    Best of Luck,

    Bob

    Re: Anyone recommend cortisone injections?

I have had 3 this past 2 months and they only helped a few weeks But my very first one a few years ago was a GOD send!! I thought the pain was gone an cured from the shot but it wasn't! They are a temporary pain reliever but can last for months or just weeks or may not much at all. Everyone is different but I would try it if I were him to hopefully get some relief for some time.

Has your husband been doing any cold therapy? Cortisone shots are given to reduce swelling and inflammation; cold can do the same thing! If he is using something out of the freezer the rule is 20 minutes on maximum and 20 minutes off minimum. Always treat over clothing. Even if he does end up getting a shot he can do some cold. Remember: Rest Ice Compression Elevation RICE
