    Missing wrist ligaments???

    Hi!

Anyone else been diagnosed with missing ligaments?

4 weeks ago I had an arthroscope to try and repair torn TFCC in the wrist and during the procedure he found that I'm missing both the scapho-lunate and lunate-triquetral ligaments. This wasn't found on the MRI.

I was scheduled to also have ulna shortening (for ulna impaction damage) done at the same time, but the surgeon changed his mind after finding the missing ligaments as he though he may potentially do more harm than good with the ligaments missing. He said we MAY do the shortening at a later date after looking into things more and working through the pros and cons.

I suppose I'm just on the hunt for any info from others who have a similar issue with missing ligaments. He said it's quite uncommon and thinks I was probably born without them as there's absolutely NOTHING there!

If the TFCC cleanup doesn't help and he can't suggest what to do next, I'll definitely look for a second opinion but just wanted to do a little of my own research first so that I'm more prepared on what questions to ask the specialists.

Thanks so much for your time,
    Nicole (Sydney, Australia)

Hm. I could give advice about the TFCC tear and the ulnar shortening, but I'm clueless about the missing ligaments!

Thanks CameraGirl1112! Have been searching online for info on missing ligaments and can't find much at all Have an appt back with the specialist late next week, so will be interested to see what he suggests as I'm still getting lots of pain and wrist weakness.

With your ulna impaction, did you already have signs of damage on your lunate prior to shortening and how's it all going for you now?

I didn't have signs of damage on my lunate, actually. I guess the way my therapist explained it was: my TFCC tear actually caused my ulnar impaction, because the TFCC wasn't the "trampoline" between the two bones anymore, and my ulna was poking it's way through the hole in my TFCC, because it's a pretty large central tear.

I actually had my ulnar shortening done in September 2015, and have been in physical therapy since. I still have pain in my TFCC area, and my whole arm hurts from the plate (but my arms are pretty small, and we knew that the plate would cause some issues). I go this Thursday, April 14th, to schedule my plate removal surgery! I'm just starting to get a little strength back in my arm and shoulder from not being able to use my arm (my original injury was in June of 2014!) I don't have my full ROM, though, because the plate doesn't allow me to rotate my forearm completely. I'm hoping a lot of my problems will go away when I get this out!

Ah OK - I also have a very large central hole and the MRI showed black areas on the lunate where the ulna is apparently bumping through the hole and banging onto the lunate.

So overall, are you happy that you went ahead with the ulnar shortening? Sorry - need to search back through the rest of your history

All the best for your appt and hope you don't have to wait too long to get your plate removed. Will keep an eye out for any updates from you!

Although it was a very long process, I am glad that I had the ulnar shortening done. I had gone through lots of physical therapy, two cortisone injections, and two TFCC debridements before the ulnar shortening, and none of it helped with the pain. Even though I still have a little bit of pain in my TFCC area, it's definitely not as bad; I can move my wrist more, and I was able to strengthen my wrist and arm (something that I wasn't able to do before).

That's great! And from what I've read on others' progress, the removal of your plate will help you get the last part of ROM back (and also help with the forearm pain)

All the best for your appointment - hopefully you're on the home stretch now!
