    Hand Woes

10 years ago, my friend started experiencing hand pain.
She was diagnosed with carpel, and had an operation.
The operation did nothing. Other doctors checked and said the operation was done correctly.
Now, both her of hands have the same problem. She no longer plays the violin or paints.
Surgery doesn't seem to work. Therapy helps a little.
    Can anything be done?

Could you tell us exactly where your friend is experiencing the pain in her hands? Thumb area, fingers, palms, or wrists?
Carpel tunnel surgery, if done properly, should last a life time.

I think sometimes the nerves can be affected at more than one point, so that carpal tunnel surgery will not always solve the issue. I think it was my hand therapist who told me this. Has your friend seen a physiotherapist? Very sorry to hear she has had to give up her violin and painting. I can relate to that.

Was there any talk about what might have caused it? There are a variety of possible causes such as obesity, diabetes, hypothyroidism, lupus, RA, gout, broken bones, dislocated bones, bone spurs, and new bone growth from healing bones.

It can also be work related, like working as a cashier in a busy supermarket.

Knowing the cause could make a big difference in knowing what can be done about it, if anything.
