    4th/5th CMC Arthrodesis/Fusion

    Hi All

I'm looking at potentially having a fusion / arthrodesis of my 4th and 5th CMC joint (to the Hamate bone) in my right hand as a means of getting rid of some post-traumatic osteoarthritis in that joint. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of a fusion of any of the CMC joints (other than the thumb)? I'm finding it difficult to get much info as to how much such a fusion will impact the function of the hand, grip strength, etc?

    Thanks

    Mark

Haven't had the procedure, but one of my hand therapists said it is the only surgery she actually recommends to her clients because of the relief it provides and because it still allows for function. It is somehting I have considered, but I ended up settling for wearing custom thumb splints daily instead.

Is this the procedure that usually follows a fracture? I thought I had researched all possible surgeries for thumb joint deteriorization (is that what you have?). I finally settled on the mini tightrope suspensionplasty, which I was told is less invasive, and I'm scheduled for surgery next week.
