    Cast too Tight

It is 3:00 am and I am in misery. I broke my wrist almost 4 weeks ago and the pain is getting unbearable.I have a cast on just below my elbow. It didn't start really start hurting bad until about 4 days ago. It feels like it is rubbing against the bone on my wrist. My skin is burning and the cast that comes around my thumb is so tight it is causing a blister, I am putting neosporin on it to try and keep it from getting infected. I am getting shooting pains in the back of my hand. My fingers and thumb are swollen every morning but not blue or numb. They are tingling.I did not have surgery.

I went back to the dr Tuesday and asked him if he could cut the cast off around my thumb and he said no. He told me the cast has to be tight to heal. He took a xray and said it was healing. I know a cast has to be tight but to the point it hurts so bad? When I told him I was having shooting pains in my hand he said well its broke. Shouldn't the pain be letting up instead of increasing? I have a little over 3 weeks before it comes off but I don't think I can stand it that long.

Should I go back to my regular family dr and have him look at it? I've never had a broken bone before so don't know what is natural or not.

    Re: Cast too Tight

    Dear bonnie28,

Surgeons usually don't do the after care, except to check on the x-rays to check if the bone is solid. Can you phone your regular doctor and ask to speak to a nurse and explain that your skin has abrasion from the cast directly rubbing against it and ask if you can get in to the office?
The nurse may agree and then just tuck in a bit of cotton or soft gauze.

If you know what to do, you can buy some soft gauze and carefully tuck a little bit inbetween skin and cast. If you do that I also would apply a little bit of new jojoba cream or new vit. D ointment cream on the abrasion to soothe it and help it recover. Don't risk infection with old product. Don't use any kind of food oil or cream.

I have had many breaks and many casts and have often loosened them at the edge just a bit, enough to stop the rubbing against the skin. That may mean cutting the cast only 1/4 of an inch, no more.

Definitely if you are not sure of what you are doing, then be sure to talk to your primary care staff.

    Re: Cast too Tight

Well I went to my regular dr and yes the cast was to tight. The nurse mentioned a person could get compartment syndrome from a tight cast. My dr sent me to another dr who is a hand specialist and they said right away oh my that cast is way to tight and they cut it off right away. She took xyrays and said it was healing good. I had several water blisters on the palm of my hand. She did not put me back in a hard cast but some kind of brace. I never felt so much relief when that cast came off.
