    cmc surgery

Curious how people have endured the first few days after cmc surgery. My doctor said I would hate him and that is not encouraging to me. Putting it off as long as I can.

    Re: cmc surgery

    Dear con808,

I haven't had that surgery, but I read that it takes months to recover.
The closest I had was a broken wrist, from which I am now recovered, but I had to have a plate inserted then later had to have the plate removed. So that is a different type of surgery.

If you need this done, you need it. But I would get at least one other medical opinion, and ask about possible complications and what would need to be done.

Once there is a plan my advice is follow medical directions exactly, make sure to keep the area clean. dry and protected from injury.

Take pain meds exactly as directed even if you have to use a timer inbetween doses. Yes surgery is not easy. but it is a lot easier if you plan for the surgery and recovery. So ask your doctor exactly what to expect, and also what 'could' happen so you are prepared.

Have plenty of things planned to occupy your mind.
The internet isn't all there is to do. LOL

    Re: cmc surgery

I had CMC surgery on both thumbs in 2015 (one in April, second in December).

I had a nerve block as part of surgery that totally deadened my arm for 12-18 hours so there was no initial pain. Once the block wore off, I took oxycodone for about a day and a half, tapering off and switched to just ibuprofen for the next week or so. Icing the area helps a lot, too.

The most important thing to do, which I can't stress enough, is to keep your hand elevated above your heart all the time -- 24/7. I kept my hand elevated for 6 weeks the second time. The first time, I stopped after about 10 days and oh my gosh the next day the pain was excruciating due to swelling. I went back to elevation about that. You can make a pillow contraption to keep your hand elevated while you sleep.

Good luck if you go forward. I am very happy with my results.

    Dear con808,

Hon, you must discuss all of your needs with your doctor.

There may be a solution, but you need to address what will be required before you start this procedure. Call on friends, family, a social worker, a church, whoever.
