    Finding a hand surgeon

I am contemplating CMC arthroplasty and wonder how you go about finding a great surgeon. I had an initial consultation with a hand specialist who seems very good and has good academic and training credentials but he's very young (34-ish, just finished a 2-year fellowship).

What research do you do? What questions do you ask?

    Thanks for any help.

Ask your PCP for a recommendation. Ask around to your friends if anyone has used a hand surgeon. Check their CV (which you've evidently done). Find out how many of this procedure he has done. What is his success rate? Is the residency he did considered one of the top ones for hand surgery? Did he do a fellowship under a well respected hand surgeon? And is he board certified (whatever that board may be for hand surgeons)? Does he have any patients you could talk with?
