Thumb injections?

I have been diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in both thumbs. Doc has prescribed an “ultrasound guided injection” of steroid to see if it helps with the pain, scheduled for next week. It has been suggested that if the steroid aleviates the pain I might be tempted to overuse the thumb (I'm a musician) possibly causing further damage to the joint. Pain serves a purpose and bypassing that 'warning' might be detrimental in the long run... Any thoughts please?

Re: Thumb injections?

Osteoarthritis is a repetitive motion condition. The only way to stop the progression is to stop doing the motion. Are you prepared to do that with or without the pain? That's the question. Sure, it will get worse with use because more of the cartilage will wear away. There will be more bone-on-bone motion causing inflammation and pain.

Do none of the medications help? If you've run thru them, I'd say the steroid injection is your next best bet. If it doesn't work, then you have a big decision to make about surgery and what that might mean down the road. Hopefully you are seeing an ortho who works with athletes, dancers and musicians so that s/he understands the motions and impact this can cause.
