Unhappy Somebdy help me - hip pain

Somebody please help me!
I a 50 year old female.
I have a lot of pain after standing.
It is ok in the am getting worse as the day goes on.
Some times it gets so bad I can't sleep.
I can't even stand in line at the grocery store.
I saw my Dr and had x-rays. There was some mild degenerative changes in my lumbar region.
My hip was "negative".
(I have arthritis in my knee and fingers.)
My Dr. put me on peroxicam and also gave me Darvocet to help me so I can sleep.
I have slight improvement but when it realy starts hurting even the Darvocet does not help much.
Oh yes, when my hip is hurting a lot I will also have pain in my lower leg near my ankle.

Hypobug

You may like to try a few doses of Kalmia 30c. It is herbal homeopathic preparation that has been found to help in such neuralgic hip pains extending down wards in rheumatic constitutions. It might help

I have a condition similar to yours. Periodically I get lumbar epidural steroid injections, (at my doctor's hospital, and it's done using xray/fluoroscopy) and the treatment give me several months (3-5) of relief. This treatment is not a "cure", but can help. Eventually, in my case, I will have to have surgery to correct the spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal and nerve openings). What you are feeling pain wise, is possibly nerve entrapment, specifically the sciatic nerve. Pain can start in your buttocks and radiate all the way down to your foot. You might notice that when you bend forward from your waist, the pain lessens? This is because the "straighter" you stand, the more your spinal column vertebra presses on the spinal cord and nerves which exit out from the spine. There is a lot of information out on the Web, but you might want to look at this site FYI. http://www.spine.org/articles/lumbarspinalstenosis.cfm

I hope you feel better soon!

It's your hip that hurts when you stand?
How about Hip Bursitis?
You can copy paste this URl below and read about it
http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/fact/thr_report.cfm?Thread_ID=139&topcategory =Hip

Hope you find an answer soon.

Re: Somebdy help me - hip pain

I'm kind of confuse here.

u said that your hip x-rays tested "negative" but u still have hip pains???

does ur hip x-rays reveal that u have osteo-arthritis?

when i first joined this forum, i was having extruciating pain in my hips. it turned out that i have severe osteo-arthritis in my hips. the cartilages from the x-ray were wearing out which was the reason why i was in so much pain and don't have the mobility to bend my legs or lift it up so that i could wear my socks.

when u are in so much pain, what u need to do is try to avoid squashing /bending or lifting taks that up too much pressure on your hips. eventually your body will have the ability to heal it safe.

i use hot pack when i sleep - give it a try (i don't use it any more because the pain has gone over time). And i still take glucosamine to nourish my joints. whether that thing works or not i still take it.

Re: Somebdy help me - hip pain

I have tronchoteric bursitus, most likely caused by my spine and skeletal misalignment problems.

If this is your problem, you will be very tender when you press on the hip area. When I get up from sitting, even for a short time, it hurts, usually until I've walked a little.

In my case, I suffered with it intermittently for 5 years before being diagnosed. Ibuprofen usually helped but several months ago it got so bad that I couldn't put any weight on my foot, not even if I just used the big toe when walking.

My doctor gave me a steriod injection, and after 3 days of making things worse, it worked like a charm. It only lasted 3 months though. When I told him that it had worn off, he said that if the pain got totally unbearable to come back and he would do another injection but I couldn't have too many because they ruin the cartilage.

About this same time, our local YMCA opened a beautiful aquatic center with 3 pools, one of them being a therapy pool. I have been going several times a week and stretching and working out in the warm therapy pool. One thing that helps a lot is the hand held jet they have there. I just run it up and down over the entire hip for several minutes. This is something you could do with an adjustable shower head, also. I also use their underwater treadmill. So far, I have been able to keep the pain at bay.

I hope this helps.

Been there done that. But I can't stand the fumes from the chlorine in the bleach so no pool for me.
However I have located the world's nicest Chiropractor and he has succeeded in doing away with my Bursitis pain. Really it's now just an tiny echo of what it was.
Of course, I'm commited forever to seeing him and doing the wobbler stretches he suggested because he can't actually stop the spinal bending he can only slow it down, keep the joints aligned as good as possible and keep the muscles in better shape, but it's so nice to have the 24/7 hip Bursitis pain GONE.

It's true that I had it for a long long time but family problems made me put off seeing the Dr.
when I fianlly couldn't stand it anymore I went.
X-ray was negative.
But an MRI report said Greater Torcantic Bursitis
That's why I suggested Bursitis since the OP's Xray was negative.

Re: Somebdy help me - hip pain

I'm glad you found some relief, snowmelts. The pain is very annoying. I, too, am very glad to see it stay away,

My doc never ordered any test, though, just diagnosed it. I did tell him that I had had a short bout with bursitus about 10 years ago, but the 5 years between that and my MVA, I had not had any pain there at all.

How do the x-rays and MRI help with the diagnosis?

He had to have been right about it though, as the injection really helped. Perhaps I should ask about imaging though? What do you think?

Thanks.

Re: Somebdy help me - hip pain

Oh no, you don't need the imageing.
It agravates me no end the way my Dr orders tests.
Sometimes I think she knows nothing.. cuz all she does is order tests and send me to specialists.
It's a game my Dr plays to get more money since I have good insurance.

For the Bursitis..
1. it was make an office call and get told I need a hip Xray (My Dr gets paid) no pain relief this time
2. make Xray trip (hospital gets paid) no pain relief this time
3. Make follow up dr visit (my Dr gets paid) no pain relief this time
4. Make hip MRI apointment.. wait.. Go take MRI (Hospital gets paid) no pain relief this time
5. Second Follow up Dr apointment (My Dr gets paid) no pain relief this time
6. My Dr has report..it's Bursitis.. All she does is send me to Orthapedic surgern! (My Dr gets paid) no pain relief this time
7. I make Orthapedic apointment and go. Orthapedic guy had told me to bring copies of Xrays and MRI report. He looks at Xray and says.. nothing wrong with the hip bone. I KNOW! I begged him to please give me the shot!!! (He gets paid for that visit) He said he had none but would order it and give me the shot. no pain relief this time but at least he promised help!
8. Go back and get shot (Orthorpedic Dr gets paid) and three days later I finally have pain relief!!! He also prescribed 6 weeks Physical Therapy at his office (he and the therapist get paid each time I attended therapy) It was the shot that did the trick. Of course I have in multiple areas of my hip and he can only "shoot" one area, so The therapy helped a little bit I guess but it did not do anywhere near as good as the shot.

The total cost of all this was paid by my insurance but it was a huge hunk of money and totally unnessary extension of my pain time as my Dr should have been able to dx Bursitis and give me the shot the very first visit!!
Can you tell I was rather peeved?
I'll trade your Dr for mine any day of the week
I AM going to change Dr's this spring. I'm tired of her merry-go-round.

Hip Bursitis certainly returns.. never really leaves for long..
untill I found this Chiropractor and I just am thrilled with the Chiropractic sessions results.

Re: Somebdy help me - hip pain

Hi, sorry it took me so long to reply. I was away from my pc and then had trouble logging on.
In answer to your question about my x-rays I was only told that my hip was negative and that there were some mild degenerative changes int he lumbar. This is what I was told when I called for my results. They also said to keep taking the meds (nsaid and darvocet) and if it continues to make another appointment.
I don't understand them treating me with drugs without knowing what they are treating.
Most of all I just want this pain gone.
Oh yes, I do have osteoarthritis in my knee.
I also have it in my fingers.

By the way, how does a doctor know without testing what kind of arthritis you have?

Re: Somebdy help me - hip pain

Osteoarthritis (OA) is hard to miss on bone Xrays because OA appears as disentragrated cartilidge and rubbed and raggy bone edges where bones rubbed together from lack of cartilidge to cushin them so when it's seen on an X-ray they know it's that kind.

Mild degenerative changes in the lumbar means is most likly the very beginning of OA in your spine. (Degererated Discs do not always become OA but most often they do)

For other kinds like RA blood tests and/or MRI's are needed for DX. These other kinds are not from disentragrateing cartilidge/ shrinking discs or bone rubbing on bone.

I'm 59 and I have very very bad full blown OA along the entire length of my spine from pelvic to neck (lumbar is the lower spine area) as well as in both knees.

BUT there is no sign of it in my hips.

The 15 % bend in my spine pulls the muscles too strickly over the hip and thereby smashes and irritates the bursa sacs and that causes rather painful Hip Bursitis.
Hip Bursitis can feel like my darned hip bone was rotting! On bad days it was on fire with 24/7 pain. On good days it was like haveing an abcessed toothache in my hip.

Like I said above my Chiro has helped me so much with this on-going problem.

Re: Somebdy help me - hip pain

somelts- how can a doctor diagnoise that u have bursitis and what can be done about it?

last year i was in severe pain in my hips that it feels like bones grinding each one another that i stayed in bed the rest on the day and not dare to move.

now, that pain feeling has gone away, leaving me limping.

Re: Somebdy help me - hip pain

Jimmyhonda, what MY Dr did to dx Bursitis was what I listed in the 8 visits I mentioned in my post above.
In other words she didn't!
BUT the MRI report clearly listed it as the problem seen on the MRI.
So the MRI technition who made the report is the one tha did the Dx.

KathyIL posted above that her Dr simply knew.
My friend had shoulder bursitsis and her DR simply knew what it was, no testing involved.
I wish my Dr was like that and knew more without tests!

Hip Bursitis is not a one day thing. Mine has been around a couple years.
Hurt last night a lot, because I have been carrying heavy items and climbing stairs this week (I know I shouldn't but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do)
BUT I'm going to see my Chiropractor this morning and he WILL help.
He always does

Hip Bursitsis pain can be controled with steroid shots and physical therapy but if its from the bending spine then its a forever reoccurring thing.

When it's "calm" it feels like a toothache on the outer side of your hip running down your flank toward your knee. When its irritated its rather painful 24/7 especially when useing the muscle that runs over the far outside of the hip flat bone ( getting up from setting, climbing stairs, moving that leg) You can't stand to sleep on that side, that's for sure!
