Rheumatoid Arthritis

Is it possible to just have it in my neck and shoulder area?

My family doctor first thought it was a blocked salivary gland I went for 2 tests for that and they came back negative. He prescribed Naproxyn 2 times a day when I have pain. Well if I wait till I have the pain it sometimes takes a day or 2 for the medication to start working. I started taking it every day 2 times a day and feel much better although it can still flare up a bit it isnt too painful. He only wanted me to take it when I have the pain but if I do that I have no quality of life whatsoever. My job and family life are suffering.

I had blood work done and he called me on the phone and told me my sed rate was 42. He said it isnt tooo high. I asked him what the normail rate was and he said it depended on your age. Well I am a 40 year old woman what is a normal sed rate for someone my age?

I also go to the chriopractor 1-2 times a week and am really not sure if it is helping me or not. He took xray of my neck and said there is thinning by
the disks C5-C6. He also said he sees some white on my bones which suggests arthritis but that it doesnt look tooo bad.

I'm going back to my primary dr on Tuesday and dont know where to go from here. The naproxyn seems to be helping but I am afraid of the side effects. Is there something that he can prescribe me that doesnt have too many side effects? Also should I ask him for a prescription for a TENS machine? I was wondering if that will help? I am also taking formula 303 as a muscle relaxer and it seems to help as well. Should I ask him for a muscle relaxer?

I am sooo confused and lost. I just hate dealing with the pain which is usually starts on the left side of my neck and radiates into my shoulders and causes bad headaches. I use a heating pad frequently also.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Rheumatoid Arthritis

There are so many types of arthritis and most of them take alot of testing to diagnose. A SED rate of 42 is indacative of inflammation somewhere in the body. Anything over 20 is high.

If the Naprosyn is helping your problems then that is another give away. NSAID's are the only type of painkillers that take away joint/tendon pain. You should see a specialist and have some more tests done.

Re: Rheumatoid Arthritis

Hi, I have several herniated/bulging discs in my cervical spine (neck) and I have the type of pain you describe. Have you had an MRI in that area? It could be that, and not really arthritis.
