Question Sudden, excruciating knee pain for long-time Arthritis sufferer

Hi All,
I've had chronic Arthritis in various joints since my 20's - now 50. At first diagnosed with RA, then that was recinded. I am an RN and have a bit of knowledge about all this, but I have several days wait to see my doctor, and then several more no doubt before an MRI result will be available and I am wondering if anyone has any ideas of what may be wrong now.
I had surgery on this knee a couple years ago - Meniscus repair, trimming of tissue, etc. I have Grade 4 Chondromalacia, and was told the only thing left after that surgery was a Knee-replacement. I've been putting that off living with chronic, but manageble pain until a few days ago. I suddenly woke up with excruciating pain unable to straighten my leg or bear any weight at all. It is primarily in the back of my knee and down the lateral aspect. Sometimes it radiates all the way down to my foot, throbbing, miserable!
Usually for the first few hours after waking, I can hardly move my leg. Within a few hours and some pain killers, I can toe touch and by the end of the day I can limp around the house. This has been going on for 5 days now and has improved a bit. Any ideas of what is going on in there? I'm very anxious and worried.
Thank you!

i'm sorry you're in such pain, i know exactly how it feels. i have had both knees replaced now. however, my ortho did a few scope surgeries before replacement. you could have broken bone fragments in there, my doc removed those with scope, a couple of times, to put off replacement. finally i did'nt have much of a knee left, so he did replacement.
you may be able to get by with more scope surgery, it will depend on how much bone you have left..........hope you do well....bevann
