What's wrong with my knees?

I'm 16, have had pain in my knees for over 2 years now. Went to the doctor a couple of months ago, she said it could be chondromalacia and put me on naproxen, 2 times a day. There's apparently no swelling. The pain I have is aching mostly, hurts to move some times, and my knees feel very stiff. The symptoms move around, so my left knee might be worse than the right sometimes, then it will change. The Naproxen helped a little, eased the pain when not moving, but when I move then I'm still achey and stiff. They dont hurt to touch, not red or swollen. The Naproxen is now all finished and I don't know if the doctor will be able to do anything else. What could be up?

Re: What's wrong with my knees?

I badly injured my knees at 14 so I know what it's like to be a teen with aching knees.

I'd ask your parents about getting an evaluation by an orthopedist, just to make sure it isn't anything that can be fixed or treated. Sometimes knees ache as a result of a past infection where the "leftovers" from the infection kind of settle in the joints(did this in my right wrist once) and that will slowly go away over several months. But sometimes, teens can develop joint problems that do need attention. Injuries can hide....took 2 years before I got to see an orthopedist only to find out I had torn up the inside of my knee joints pretty badly....the family doc said he felt nothing wrong.

So since you still hurt after taking the Naproxen, I think it's time to ask for a second opinion from a specialist...just in case.
