    flovent and severe depression/anxiety

    hello,

i am a 31 year old male who was recently diagnosed with asthma.
i was prescribed ventolin (8 puffs daily as required) & flovent (250 mcg's, twice daily).

i've been using flovent twice daily for almost two weeks now (not even using ventolin now...) - and i've developed waves of severe anxiety and worse, severe depression. this behavior is totally unlike me and is very, very scary. stupidly it never occurred to me until today to read up on flovent, or that it might be the cause. well, it seems i'm not the only one. i had no idea that inhaled steroids could do this? i was told by my pharmacist that inhaled corticosteroids are completely harmless outside of maybe some minor anxiety, small weight gain or even thrush (if i weren't to rinse/spit). small potatoes, i thought. now i'm a complete freaking mess. i can deal with the anxiety episodes - but the severe depression is too scary.

thing is, this drug has worked magic on my breathing. & i know that all preventive inhalers are corticosteroid based - so i really only have 2 options : stay on and suffer the psychological effects (or worse)...or go off and suffer major asthma attacks which put me in the hospital (or worse) what a reality.

anyone else have to deal with this?

could i just take a single puff in the morning and still protect myself?
could i go back to the clinic and get a smaller dose and still be able to keep attacks at bay?

    I am desperate here...

    thanks,

    Martin.

    anyone?
i just took my nighttime dose about 3 hours ago and am feeling it again...
i can't get in to see my GP until the 12th (he's on vacation). thinking of seeing an emerg doc tomorrow. would reducing my flovent dose in half (125 mcg/twice daily) maybe still work for me?
    please and thank you!

I've been on Flovent for over 20 years and never experienced this. Are you sure you're not depressed because you have asthma - and not because of the med? The level you are talking about is just not consistent with this med. The goal for any asthmatic should be to be on as low a dose as possible. I started on 4 puffs a day and am now at 1 perday - which should be taken in the evening not the morning. You might talk with you doctor about lowering your dosage. And try to concentrate on how well controlled your asthma is on this med.

the reaction is def from the med. never had suicidal thoughts before. asthma sucks, but it's so bad that i'd leave my dog and family behind for. do you think that this dose is too high? i am going to go to a doctor and see about taking half the dose. it really does help with my asthma. i'd hate to go off if it can be helped.
    thanks for the response.

4 puffs a day is the standard beginning dosage. I know it's hard to see a pulmonologist in Canada but that would be your best bet to get a final determination.

well i'm using a 250 mcg inhaler 1 puff x's a day. @ 4 puffs, that would be 1000 mcg (double what i'm doing now). no way. depressed enough off of this dosage...i want to go down, not up.
will try to see a pulmonologist.

I'm on 110 so it's a much lower dosage. I'd push for the pulmo.

had a severe panic attack yesterday. this isn't in my head. this is too much. reading on flovent/flonase, the horror stories are abundant. i am not the only one. i must be corticosteroid sensitive.
going to the emerg tonight to get my dose cut in half.
and looking into a pulmo when i see my GP.
    thanks!
