When to go to the ER

My son is 18 and has mostly seasonal asthma, triggered by corn mold (and we live across the street from a cornfield). About 5 days ago he started with the coughing, so pulmonary doc ordered prednisone, which usually works like a charm. This is day 7 and he is still taking two inhalers, another round of prednisone, nebulizer every 4 hours, benzonate cough pearls, flonase, and montelucast. Little sleep because of coughing.

This is the longest he has had such bad symptoms. He is blowing about 350 (he is 5'9" and weighs 230) Doc said lungs are clear. Any suggestions? How long is too long for the cough?

    Thanks!
    Debbi

Re: When to go to the ER

I'd ditch the pearls and ask for codeine cough syrup. I have cough variant asthma and sometimes I get in a loop that nothing else will stop. And you sleep well. Singulair (montelukast) can take up to 2 months to work and often doesn't work for everyone. It doesn't do a thing for me.

That's a hard thing to deal with for both of you, childofpromse.

Some allergy specialists can desensitize patients. It is a slow process. Have you tried that route?
