Headache from Symbicort or Combivent Respimat

I am newly diagnosed with what my doctor thinks is Acid reflux induced asthma. Having more tests to confirm. The asthma inhalers are really helping my breathing but I have a horrible headache. For those who have taken these meds how long does it take to get used to them and the headache to go away? I take an ibuprofen about twice a day and it helps take the edge off a little but does not get rid of the headache. Been using both inhalers exactly as prescribed. The Symbicort two puffs twice a day and the Combivent as needed but no more than every 6 hours so I have been using that one twice a day and that seems to be enough. Only been on inhalers for 2 days and my head is really hurting.

Please understand this is my non-professional opinion! I would not be on both meds unless my asthma was totally out of control. I would double check with your pulmonologist to see if this is really what you need to be on. Getting the reflux under control would seem to be the better option.

Yes that is the plan to get my acid reflux under control. I am also on Omeprazole for that and am going to have a Endoscopy because of the acid reflux. So we will take it from there. I also am getting a wedge pillow to sleep on an incline since the acid reflux while laying down is what she thinks is causing the whole problem. So in the meantime she prescribed both of these inhalers because my asthma was getting really bad.

I think that's a huge dosage of the meds. Asthma and reflux are two different conditions....while reflux can cause asthma like wheezing, it doesnt cause asthma.

Is it a pulmonologist who diagnosed you?

Yay on the soon-to-be upper endoscopy!

Yeah I can hardly wait to have the endoscopy..haha. Do they go through the nose? At least I can find out if I have damage from the acid reflux or any other problems going on.

No the doctor is not a pulmonologist. I didn't want to go to a specific specialist at first because with my symptoms other things needed to be ruled out like congestive heart failure and H-pylori which I am bringing in a sample tomorrow to be tested for that. I went to an Internist who has a great reputation for diagnosing things like this. My first post I did say she thinks acid reflux is the problem but that is only her initial hunch really. I am having more tests to see what is really causing the asthma.

I also have had chronic sinus problems for over 10 years and am having a CT scan of my sinuses. So the acid reflux asthma is not really the diagnosis it's just probably the problem but she said I may have more than one thing causing breathing problems. I've had breathing problems for years and my last doctor who was a General Practitioner didn't really do much or run any tests so I am so far very happy with this new doctor. But will see what these tests reveal I may end up at a pulmonologist.

Also in researching asthma many things can cause asthma from allergies, pollutants, sinusitis, acid reflux disease and more. So it is asthma it's just my trigger is possibly acid reflux or sinusitis or something else that me and my doctor are trying to get to the bottom of.

My headache is almost gone today now. I took 1 ibuprofen this morning before going out on a sunny day which can cause a headache anyway and my headache went away completely and now it is just coming back slightly but not bad at all.

I also wanted to add as far as the dosage of meds goes. What dosage is usually given? The Symbicort I know is twice a day two puffs. And even on the pamphlet it mentions having a back up inhaler in case and that it takes two weeks for the Symbicort to fully take effect. Tonight I had gone 10 hours without the Combivent rescue inhaler and started to have a hard time breathing so I had a puff and felt better immediately. I don't think I am on too much when I comes to my symptoms. I almost went to the ER twice last week and had hardly any sleep coughing and wheezing trying to sleep. I am just happy to be able to breath again. I'm not a big fan of being on steroids of any kind but it works.

Re: Headache from Symbicort or Combivent Respimat

Cause, trigger, exacerbating symptoms or asthma-like are all separate issues, but can feel the same. Asthma isn't caused by reflux disease, but can be triggered or feel the same as asthma. I know because I have both.
My asthma is cough-variant, intrinsic and extrinsic. Allergies are not a trigger, but I have a lot of sensitivities to natural environmental irritants. Colds are not good, and Indouble my meds during that type of illness.

A complete testing procedure is important, and you're in the process. I suspect that for some, semantics isn't an issue. For me, it is. But when diagnosis isnt clear, certain words can cause confusion. Hopefully, a pulmonologist and GI will get it sorted and be concise in diagnosis.

Your inhaler meds are more rescue/dialator than steroid....usually, a higher dosage steroid is used to help with inflammation and the rescue used as needed. The long lasting bronchodilator taken twice a day is usually sufficient if the inflammation is being dealt with. But in saying that, you are being symptomatically treated until diagnosis is found. Logical, but for initial dosage...it seems high, and that could very well cause the headache.

Please let us know how you are doing and what the results are of your testing.

    Hugs,

Regarding upper endoscopy, it's a scope put down your throat, down the esophagus and into the stomach. I was put under for the two I had. I know some are only given twilight meds.

The one thing...you will have lots of gas afterward because air is used to expand the esophagus wide enough to accommodate the tube and to see clearly. I also had biopsies done and checked for h. Pylori.

Re: Headache from Symbicort or Combivent Respimat

Thanks for all of the info. I'm new to this. I am now just using the Symbicort and it's working fine on it's own. I think it just must have took a little time to start working. I have the rescue inhaler in case I need it but haven't had to use it anymore. I still am getting a headache but not as bad but have to take ibuprofen. My doctor did suggest using turmeric for the headache and I tried some last night with black pepper and it did seem to work. I got a headache again around 1 am though and couldn't sleep so had to take ibuprofen. My doctor thought about switching me to a different inhaler but we are going to wait and see if the headaches go away or the turmeric helps because the Symbicort is really helping with my breathing. Plus I paid 50 bucks for the inhaler so I'll just use it up and if I am still having headache problems I'll go back in to the doctor and see if there is something else I can try.

I had the CT scan of my sinuses today waiting on those results.

Just wanted to add I am also still using the prescription antacid and sleeping propped up on pillows so I am at an incline. I think the combination of everything is really helping a lot.

Hi..it's good yiu are feeling some improvements.

Since you dont know what's going on exactly, I suggest considering not taking turmeric or black pepper.

I take it that tylenol doesn't help headaches?

When is your appointment for the endoscopy?
