Question Need asthma help for my father ASAP

My father has had chronic-severe asthma since 1997, he is almost 67 years old. He has not followed his doctors instructions entirely but he is getting better after 5 extended stays in the hopsital. My question currrently is: Does anyone know if the medications they prescribe can cause sever mood swings and personallity changes? He is becoming a different person, very mean and degrading, very sensitive about things unrelated to him, yelling at people for no real reason. I called his family doctor to try to discuss this with him but he did not call back, not unususal for him. I am going to call his respitory doctor also but wanted to see if I could find some info in the mean time. I would really appreciate any comments.

they probably have him on major amounts of oral steriod, that would account for the 'riod rage.

Check with the docs at the hospital to be sure any doc should be able to read his chart and tell you what the side effects are. Bring your concern up to them and try to get him on different meds as soon as is possible.

It would be good, but i know how difficult aging parents can be, to get him to go to a pulmonolgist
and establish a treatment plan with the MUCH safer control meds that are available

Best of Luck to you

I agree with cyn -- she's right, oral steroids are traditionally prescribed after hospital stays, and do tend to affect mood.

Another thing that some people do not take into account is that an extended hospital stay is not a pleasant experience and can often contribute to some form of depression. Not necessarily the clinical kind, that needs to be medicated, but perhaps he could do with some familial comfort that he is not a burden and a sickly person to be taken care of by the family?

Just a thought...
