Sorry it has taken this long for someone to respond to your question. I have been asking this question for quite some time also. It seems, though, that asthma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. I guess the first step is to find out what triggers your asthma (pollen, chemicals, food, etc.) If you can control the triggers you can maintain your asthma. Some people go to allergy specialists for this and can get allergy shots to desensitize them to whatever your allergic to. Some people have asthma from a small child and you might never really know what triggers it. My allergy doctor is a big one to take it one step at a time. She gave me nasal sprays to help control my sinus, then a bronchodilator and steroid combo inhaler to open up my airways and control inflammation. But getting back to your question, I think it is possible to help yourself ( feel better and hopefully cut down on medication) by some ways:
    1. WAtch what you eat. Cut out sugar, complex starches, and junk food as much as possible. EAt a lot of vegetables, fruit, ( apples have been proved to help airways) .
    2. Take a good multivitamin and extra calcium/magnesium, and vitamin c.
    3. Exercise and keep your immune system healthy. Compromised immune systems cannot handle triggers as well as healthy ones. I believe asthma can be categorized with other illnesses such as arthritis, fibromialgia, etc. because of the inflammation aspect.
    4. Take your medications the doctors prescribe. Read up on asthma and be infomed about it.
    5. Some people seek out naturopathic doctors to help and some get relief that way.
Asthma is a very personal disease. Its symptoms, way of controlling, and outlook for getting better is different for every person.
I hope you have a doctor who is sensitive to your questions and hope this helps you some also.

Hi, thanks a lot for your response!
Iím 25 now and I have asthma since I was very little like 4 or 5 ( Iím allergic to dust), Itís something you never get use to. My doctor didnít give me any medication; I jut use a bronchodilator every night before I go to bed. Usually I just have asthma when I lay down in bed; I sleep with to pillows to help.
I saw some adds here on this board about herb supplements that are supposed to help asthma I was wondering if they work?
I also would like to know what a peak flow is? Maybe itís a stupid question but I live in Portugal and I never heard about it. If itís good I could order one online.

Peak flow is how fast and how much air you can blow out. The peak flow meter is a little hand held device that you blow in to and this little red flag (or ball) will go up to a certain number. Your doctor will have to show you how to use it correctly and what number you should blow up to. It helps you to monitor your asthma from home. Usually when that number drops to below 80% of your best, it is time to take your medicine or call your doctor. Since asthma is a disease where your are not able to completely expell all the air out of your lungs, you can see where this number will be of interest. Hopefully the doctors in your country will be able to answer all your questions for your. It is usually best to see a specialist, whether it is an allergy specialist or lung specialist.
