Why does cold air affect asthma?

I have asthma and the second I go out into cold air, I have a real hard time breathing! Why is that? I have been thinking about getting on Singulair but I don't have good feelings about as I think in the future there will be a recall on the drug for some reason thus causing a problem if I would have been taking it long term. Of course they don't see any problems with it now, but, it usually takes awhile for them to discover problems with meds.

I'm pretty sure with asthma and cold air when the cold air hits our lungs which are oversensitive it irratates them and it constrictis ur airways....suppose the best wa to deal is breathe thru ur knows.where I live it doesn't get very cold, but I knwo I can;t drink cold drinks when I have problems.

This happens to me too. I wonder if part of it is because as the cold air hits us, we then hold our breath and cover our noses and mouths to keep it out, and that in turn causes us to have more difficulty in breathing. Don't know. Just a thing I have connected with my own symptoms. Mind you I don't have an allergy asthma, so I don't know how it affects people with that type.

Keep well.

Cold air affects asthma because of vagus nerve stimulation. Keeping your face warm with a scarf or otherwise, will eliminate this problem.

I do the same thing!
I wrap my scarf around my mouth when I'm in the cold,,,then the scarf restricts my breathing and I get short of breath!
I've been on Singulair for 6 months now with no problems,,,but I know what you mean about being concerned about the safty of drugs these days.
