Can the Dr's REALLY tell you why you are having problems breathing? How do you know what kind of Dr. to go to though?

There are some specific questions doctors can ask to determine causes. Some folks, though, have multiple issues - I have many allergies and any of those can cause asthma attacks as well as exposure to cold air and exercise.

It is best to start with your regular doctor. He/she can ask you the right questions to advise what type of specialist might be able to help you the best.

I go to a pulmonary practice that also does allergy - So I'm pretty well covered that way.

The best way to tell if a person has asthma is to keep record of peak flows over a period of time. Any big variations can indicate asthma or another type of respiritory disease. If you are worried enough to post on here, then I think you should go and see your doctor or practice nurse who can talk to you about any problems you are having and help you get the right testing. Things like GERD and allergies can both contribute to asthma. The GERD can be a result of asthma meds like prednisilone. COPD is a chronic condition with permanently lowered peak flows instead of asthma where the peak flows vary a lot and the air way constriction is reversible.
Hope that helps
