laryngospasm or bronchial spasm?

Yesterday, after eating two bratwursts (kinda like hot dogs) I had some sort of episode which lasted for about thirty seconds. The episode started out to where I couldn't breathe, and could barely talk. After ten seconds, it had gotten worse, to the point where load whistling sounds where coming from my mouth. After the episode, I sat down on the couch for about an hour with my brother. Even though the episode was over, I had difficulties breathing so I called 911.

Later that night I was released from the hospital. Nobody knew what caused it. They sent me home with papers saying it was bronchial spasm, however I believe that they are wrong, and I think it is laryngospasm. They said it was caused by my asthma and possibly an allergic reaction.

I haven't done a whole bunch of research between laryngospasm and bronchial spasm, but bronchial spasm sounds like a big asthma attack, and thats definetly not what happened. Prior to the episode I was breathing normally, and felt completely fine, no nausea or anything.

To summarize this whole story, basically I ate two hot dogs with taco cheese, and right after that I had an episode that lasted about thirty seconds where I could barely move and could not talk at all, during this episode weird whistling noices came from my mouth.

Re: laryngospasm or bronchial spasm?

I have had 2 laryngospasms...they always start with a deep tickle on the left side of my throat that causes a violent cough, immediatly followed by a inability to talk or take in much air, trying to breath in causes a horrible sound. They last less than a minute, and breathing is normal afterwards. It sounds like yours was a bronchospasm perhaps since you had breathing issues afterwards.
