    Recent Asthma Diagnosis- After Bronchitis

    Hello Everyone,
I have bad allergies that I keep under control with Singulair and Allegra. This combination has kept me under control for a couple years now. I've always had a rescue inhaler just in case my allergies get bad and I get some shortness of breath, I would maybe use it once a month- sometimes less.

About two months ago, I got a bad case on bronchitis. Ever since, I have had bad asthma problems. I was put on Flovent for two weeks by my PCP and then told to gradually reduce it. I was feeling pretty good but I went off it, I started getting asthma attacks every day. Two weeks ago I was put back on Flovent at the maximum dose.

A few days ago I was at work and had an asthma attack that I was having a lot of trouble recovering from. I ended up driving myself to the ER. Now I'm on prednisone and I have a follow up with my PCP tomorrow. She mentioned she may have to upgrade me to Advair if the Flovent doesn't help.

Here's my question: Has anyone else suddenly become asthmatic after getting sick? Before I got bronchitis I never really considered myself someone with asthma. Now I'm visiting the ER. Is this permanent? I am afraid of taking Advair after reading about an increased risk of death. I'm wondering if I should stick it out with the Flovent for a few more weeks before switching.

Any advice would be appreciated! I'm taking my albuterol every 4-6 hours, per the ER Dr until I can see my PCP tomorrow. My chest is still feeling a bit tight ever since my bad attack. I figured this would have stabilized by now but ever since I got sick I'm just not feeling like myself.

My PCP has been great but I'm wondering if I should see my Allergist for a second opinion.

You should see a pulmonologist as they treat lung conditions. And yes, one can develop asthma as a result of bronchitis, pneumonia and other lung infections.

Thanks, I will make a few calls tomorrow. I figured I would see my PCP one last time and then move to a specialist.

Update- went back to my PCP today and discussed Advair. We decided to keep on the Flovent and add a nebulizer as needed for now.

I'm seeing a Pulmonologist at the end of the month for a second opinion.

    Thanks!
