Post 7 year old with ASD STILL struggling with toilet training

We started potty training our son when he was 3, and at the time, we didn't know he was high-functioning autistic. He was diagnosed when he was about 4.5 years old. Toilet training him has been a long, frustrating process, and we finally thought he was trained when he was 5... Nope. We tried everything, but he kept having accidents, and would just ignore them and keep playing. So finally, we booked a dr.'s visit. The pediatrician told us that if he's not having one "soft, easy to pass stool" per day (which he wasn't), he's considered constipated. So he was put on Restoralax to flush his system, then 2 weeks at a half dose to keep things humming along. It took a bit longer for the flush to take effect, but it did happen, and then we reduced his dosage and put him on the maintenance schedule. We also put him back in pull-ups while he's on the laxative. It's been over 3 weeks now, and overall, he's done quite well with his medication, and his diapers for the most part remain clean. But he still has accidents. Which wouldn't be such a big deal if he'd "react" to them. But he doesn't seem to care that he's wet or dirty. He'll just keep on doing whatever he's doing...

Can we keep him on laxative long term? I want to get him back into underwear... my mother suggested giving him/increasing his fibre intake instead. Both he and his little sister (who is developing normally... just a cranky, teething toddler) are fussy eaters. Would that be more effective? Does anyone else have experience with this kind of problem?
