Re: curious ift his resembles autoimmune hepatitis

Hi. I'm so sorry you're in a state of worry. From what I've read, there is no single test for autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Below is how I understand the approach for dxing AIH.

First goal is excluding causes OTHER than AIH, like fatty liver, alcohol abuse, drug-induced liver damage, and the VIRAL forms of hepatitis (Hep A, Hep B, and Hep C). I do not know whether Hashimoto's can affect liver (sorry).

Then, for AIH, tests for specific markers typically are done:
    • What's called Type 1 AIH is most common in US. Key tests are ANA (antinuclear antibody) and Anti-smooth muscle antibody (ASMA).
    • What's called Type 2 AIH is most common in Europe. Key tests are anti-liver kidney microsomal antibody type 1 (anti-LKM1) and anti-liver cytosol type 1 (anti-LC-1).

Bottom line: I don't think you can know yet, without further testing and history-taking. I think first step is finding out whether your liver abnormalities could be explained by causes OTHER than AIH. Next step: tests for autoantibodies seen in AIH. Keep in touch, OK? With warm wishes & hugs.
